Bronx Zoo Bronx Zoo News 2023

Does anyone know if Polly the tree kangaroo's baby has a name and what its gender is? It's over a year old and I find it a bit strange there hasn't been any kind of announcement about that.

This is from a year ago but I haven’t seen anyone on Zoochat mention it. In April of last year a document (I think a newsletter) by WCS was published including mentioning this exhibit called Aliens Among Us and will showcase ‘superpowers’ animals have to adapt to their ecosystem featuring a Chameleon and is mentioned to have all 5 kinds of vertebrates “and more”. The exhibit was also featured in a panel at the Annual AZA conference last year. I highly doubt this will be cancelled considering WCS is usually more secretive about their projects and master plan (I don’t believe we even learned of the Budgerigar exhibit until after construction broke ground.) Sorry if this was in the wrong thread as I did think this was more news then speculation considering that there is a source for it.

I went to the Bronx Zoo today and I saw a pigeon in the African savanna exhibit at World of Birds. Can somebody identify what it was? It was not the Bruce's green pigeon, it was a light tan color. Maybe a collared pigeon of some kind?

There were also unsigned geckos in the common flat lizard and Egyptian tortoise exhibit at the Reptile House.

Really? I wonder what species they are.
Could be a Mourning Gecko, I've seen them in other terrariums at the Bronx. They're a species kept at many different facilities mixed with other herps like dart frogs. They're not considered part of zoo collections but they're usually intentionally released in exhibits to eat leftover bugs and stuff I think, although in some cases are feeder for other reptiles.

They're often not intentional, they come in with plants and they don't cause enough problems to get rid of. But yes, they're mostly mourning geckos. Once you know they're there you'll start seeing them all over the place :)
