Blackpool Zoo Blackpool Zoo News 2023

Is there still a tortoise in the bongo enclosure? Biggest field i know about for one tortoise .

I've been aware of this place for quite a while, but I have never been.
Would people say that this place is worth a visit?
[For context, I am quite a distance from this particular collection]

I would always say any collection is worth the visit - the elephant enclosure and the big cat house are the latest big developments for the zoo as well as the penguins. The zoo currently hold the only Magellanic penguins within the UK - and although not unique, the zoo does hold some nice species such as Iberian wolf, black casqued hornbill, Pileated gibbon, red titi and king colobus.

The whole collection itself would take around 2-3 hours to get around including pit stops, they're also other collections you could combine your visit with such as Wild Discovery or Sea Life Blackpool. Wild Discovery hold pardine genet, Philippine crocodile and Arctic foxes, this is a short drive or around 30-45 minutes via public transport.

It is a nice zoo, they do a good job with the space they have - could improvements be made? Absolutely, but, so could most zoos. Certainly worth a visit to judge for yourself - if you're in the area, I also maybe at the zoo that day as well.

Does anyone know how the new lionesses are related? Presumably Emma & Nahla are sisters/1/2 sisters as they are the same age although I thought Hira was born to a different female, can anyone enlighten me?

Hira was born 17/09/19 to Amber x Tsavo, Emma was born 15/07/05 to an Laura and Jango/Luke (listed as unknown sire but these were the males at the park at the time) & Narla was born on 18/05/05 to Dee and Jango, so the two older females are likely half-sisters, the father of Hira's mother Amber was also Luke.

Ramon the Orangutan who departed a year ago to the Allwetter Zoo in Munster, Germany, is now father to a healthy baby boy.

As well as contributing to the international breeding programme Ramon is a dab hand when it comes to painting and his artwork has been sold for charity in the past.

The zoo hope that his replacement Kawan will breed with the existing females Cherie, Summer and Jingga very soon.

I visited Blackpool Zoo again today, I was initially worried because the forecast for today said rain and lots of it, but thankfully it was nice and sunny all day. I saw a good number of animals, more than last time, almost everything was either out and enjoying the sunshine or easily viewed from their indoor areas. The only no-shows to speak of were the red pandas, red river hogs, red-fronted and red ruffed lemurs (a lot of red things now I think about it), the grey mouse lemur and the White's tree frog. The new big cat enclosures look very nice, I don't remember the old ones well enough to really compare them, but I did like what I saw with the new ones.

The grey mouse lemur are difficult to spot, I last saw one in January, I believe they hold a pair at least, though recall seeing three at one point. The red panda are a pair, normally hidden at the far end of the enclosure. Red river hogs are two sisters, not noticed them myself on normal visits. The zebra hardstand has been redone and looks a lot better, signage has now been added to the old bongo enclosure for the zebra. The ostrich has now moved down opposite the giraffes, so hopefully something interesting is happening up where the zebra are held.

When I done the keeper experience earlier in the year and fed the Mouse Lemurs, there was a male and a female.

Hello everyone! Some news… A baby orangutan has been born at Blackpool zoo! I visited yesterday and saw the baby I don’t know anything else unfortunately.
That is good news - success for Kawan, the new male who replaced Ramon, who likewise has struck lucky in Munster.

Fantastivpc news!! First baby in how long?

More great news. I think it was Jingga that Kawan was quite enamoured with every time I'd visited and seen them over the last few months :)
