Aquarium of the Pacific Turns to Epson for Enhanced Accessibility

Aquarium of the Pacific used Epson’s technology including smart glasses, projectors and document cameras to encourage hands-on learning for all guests.

When Long Beach, California-based Aquarium of the Pacific, the largest aquarium in southern California opened its new Pacific Visions wing, it reached out to Los Alamitos, California-based Epson as a technology partner to help make the space as accessible and inclusive as possible.

Happy 25th Birthday to the Aquarium of the Pacific! It looks like the aquarium is having a photography contest to celebrate it's 25th birthday. I like this idea! I am sure that certain members on ZooChat that live in or frequently visit the area could participate.

25th Anniversary Photo Contest

I just want to say, I cannot believe that they are 25 this year! I visited the Aquarium of the Pacific on opening day when I was only 5 years old. I actually remember it like it was yesterday when there was no aquarium in Long Beach.

Recently the aquarium announced via social media that with the 25 years celebration they releasing new exhibits. The first to be announced is the SoCal Gallery which already started work months ago and will open as a completely redone Gallery (exhibit for the amber forest and Sea Lions).

For more information on the new SoCal exhibit check here: Rethemed Southern California Gallery
The opening date is July 1st, by far the most interesting addition will be the Purple Hydrocorals which the aquarium used to hold a few years ago.

The exhibit opened today, and someone was doing a livestream of it. The wifi kept cutting out on his end so it kept jumping to random parts and he didn't really show a lot of the signage unfortunately, but here's a few of the species I was able to recognize;
-Live Bull Kelp
-Leopard Sharks
-Horn Sharks
-Various species of Rockfish
-Blacksmiths
-A juvenile Giant Sea Bass
-California Moray Eel
-Garabaldi
-California Two Spot Octopus
-Catalina Gobies
-Moon Jellies
-Spiny Lobsters
-Rosy Rockfish (from the deepwater tank)
-A huge Eelgrass Meadow Aquarium (not sure if the Eelgrass is real) with what looked like a bunch of Sticklebacks
-Sand Dollars
-Shiner Perch
-California Scorpion Fish
-Various coral species such as the Hydrocorals and a few cup coral species.

There's definitely a lot more that wasn't shown, especially on the signage, so hopefully someone will be able to put out a video that shows everything or compiles a list of all the species.

Endangered Species Raised at the Aquarium of the Pacific and Santa Ana Zoo and Hatched at the Los Angeles Zoo Released into Local Wilderness

Conservation program helps bolster wild population of critically endangered southern mountain yellow-legged frog.

Approximately one hundred and seventy critically endangered southern mountain yellow-legged frogs were released into their wild habitat in the Southern California mountains on August 29 and 30, 2023. Most of the tadpoles were hatched at the Los Angeles Zoo and then traveled to the Aquarium of the Pacific and Santa Ana Zoo to be raised into frogs. Around ninety of the frogs were raised at the Aquarium of the Pacific and fifty were raised at the Santa Ana Zoo. The remaining frogs were from a group of tadpoles that were rescued from the Bobcat Fire that the Aquarium received in 2021.

“Releases of endangered species are exciting moments, but what makes this release extra special is that these frogs are from a genetically under-represented population, which can help to further increase the chances of this species’ survival,” said Brett Long, the Aquarium’s director of mammals and birds.

On May 16th, the aquarium announced they rehabilitated and released a green sea turtle back into the wild.

This morning we released a rescued green sea turtle! The sea turtle was rescued near Avila Beach, California, on December 11, 2023, by The Marine Mammal Center’s San Luis Obispo Operations based in Morro Bay, California. The Marine Mammal Center in Morro Bay transferred the rescued sea turtle to the Aquarium with authorization from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) Fisheries office for a medical evaluation, surgery, and care because of the Aquarium’s expertise in treating and releasing stranded and injured sea turtles. When the sea turtle arrived at the Aquarium on December 11, 2023, it had an injured flipper and was in need of medical care and rehabilitation. The Aquarium’s veterinary and animal husbandry staff performed surgery on the sea turtle’s injured front flipper and had been caring for the sea turtle behind the scenes as it recovered. The animal is a subadult and is estimated to be between three and five years old. “It was an incredible moment, watching the turtle make its way from the sand into the ocean and swim away. We are grateful to have had the opportunity to help it recover and return to the wild,” said Dr. Adams, Aquarium of the Pacific veterinarian. The turtle is fitted with a microchip ID and also a microsatellite tag that was provided and applied by Upwell Turtles. If all goes according to plan, we should receive location updates in about 3 weeks. Stay tuned!
