Monterey Zoo Monterey Zoo News

I appreciate the sharing of the link, as I became curious reading over the conversation as well. Absolutely shameful connections on Monterey's part!

I will say it wasn't clear who these notorious wildlife people were, although I did assume it might be Tiger King connected.

I will also say that it can be extremely hard to hear bad things about a place you liked, and even if you believe it to be true, someone's initial reaction can be one of denial.

Super interesting to me though, I will be looking into it further.

That big elephant exhibit being home to a bachelor herd of rhinos is great news, but where are the rhinos all coming from? Does anyone know?

Also, why hasn't a single other zoo nerd visited this place besides me? Don't we have a whole bunch of representatives in California? The zoo used to be dire, but it has improved considerably over the years and it is only 30 minutes from Monterey Bay Aquarium.

When I visited the zoo in 2017, the 5-acre, barren enclosure (with minimal fencing) held African Elephants, Asian Water Buffalo, Plains Zebra and Ostriches. Here's a photo:

The whites could be coming from a number of places as there is a big surplus of young(er) males. Some of the breeding facilities are having a difficult time placing males

I had intended to go when I made my California trip earlier this year, but they have odd hours (10AM-3PM) and the weather was uncooperative.

I’ve been twice, once in 2018 and again in 2021. Between the two visits, the entire zoo had pretty much been redone. I think for a non-AZA facility they’ve done a pretty good job. And yes, the ostriches are now gone, along with the elephants. On their website, they say they have no plans to get elephants back, however they also say that if there is a zoological for elephants they are open to getting more.

White rhinos are popular at the many safari places across the country, easy to obtain. There's dozens of places they could come from.

It may *visually* have improved, but it's one of the most notorious zoos in the country. I don't recommend anyone go there, personally. There's plenty of other, better places to go instead.

I've thought about it but given it remains one of the more notorious facilities around I've not been that interested. MBA is a far better place to support.

I uploaded approximately 60 photos from my visit yesterday. It seems that probably 80% of the zoo has been rebuilt during the last half-dozen or so years, but every exhibit is very functional and not necessarily aesthetically appealing. The owner likes cats, as Monterey Zoo now has the following felines: Lion, Tiger, Amur Leopard, African (Black) Leopard, Cougar, Eurasian Lynx, Bobcat, Serval and Caracal.

Are you doing another road trip?
