I had intended to go when I made my California trip earlier this year, but they have odd hours (10AM-3PM) and the weather was uncooperative. Also, why hasn't a single other zoo nerd visited this place besides me? Don't we have a whole bunch of representatives in California? The zoo used to be dire, but it has improved considerably over the years and it is only 30 minutes from Monterey Bay Aquarium.
That big elephant exhibit being home to a bachelor herd of rhinos is great news, but where are the rhinos all coming from? Does anyone know?

When I visited the zoo in 2017, the 5-acre, barren enclosure (with minimal fencing) held African Elephants, Asian Water Buffalo, Plains Zebra and Ostriches. Here's a photo:

The zoo's map (scroll down) lists the rhinos as being in with zebras and water buffalo:

I uploaded approximately 60 photos from my visit yesterday. It seems that probably 80% of the zoo has been rebuilt during the last half-dozen or so years, but every exhibit is very functional and not necessarily aesthetically appealing. The owner likes cats, as Monterey Zoo now has the following felines: Lion, Tiger, Amur Leopard, African (Black) Leopard, Cougar, Eurasian Lynx, Bobcat, Serval and Caracal.
