Edinburgh Zoo Edinburgh Zoo News 2023

That’s providing they have overnight outdoor access.

I’m fairly sure they do, in the past one of the keepers said they have access whenever they please and on very rare occasions when the panda cam was working I did see a bird fly in at night.

It’s only really Yang Guang who goes outside these days though it would seem.

How many Siberian musk deer are there now? I called Akron Zoo in January asking if they still had the species and they said they gave their group away to the UK. I don't know any other holders of the species in the UK.

There’s only one male left who’s been there since 2016, his name is Shadow.

Anyone suprised about the lack of information regarding the pandas?

I’d of thought we’d of known by now (or have a better idea) what may be replacing them and when they are departing, given in Scotland it’s the end of the summer hols.

I know some of the Chinese ambassadors met David etc in June , they seem to be keeping it close to their chests, I wasn’t even permitted to submit a FOI request either.

Tommorrow is Yang Guang’s Birthday too, so perhaps they may be an update then.

Visiting tomorrow, I'll see if anything new has happened recently!

Im hopefully going to visit again soon as well, I expect it’ll be busy with the festivals - sometimes on their birthdays (as well as a few other select days) the pandas get some enrichment although I’ve seen less of that over the last few years.

Visited yesterday:

1. The lemur house is under some sort of construction or redevelopment so the Ring tailed and Red bellied lemurs have been moved off show.

2. Saw one of the (now pretty large!) koalas joeys on the ground, running and climbing around in their enclosure.

3. The new male sloth Nico was also very active, climbing overhead and feeding on the potted plants from the overhead ropes. He is a lot smaller than the Fe the female, who was also active that day.

4. There is still no development on the former monkey walkthrough.

5. Saw Yang Guang on his birthday- he was munching outside.

6. Saw the Warty piglets- them and the mother are separated from the rest in one of the holding areas.

7. The path around the other Warty pig enclosure (Formerly tapir) is finally open- the wall opposite it for the rhinos has also been repainted.

I visited today, Red Bellied Lemur females, Kibo and Gizmo, are in the enclosure at the back of the Flamingo enclosure, they have access to one of the inside enclosures at the former Monkey Walk-through and can be viewed inside and out. The three males, Gidro, Mogwai and Bart, are off show due the indoor house at the Lemur Walk-through being refurbished.

Another point to note is that the Drills can now be viewed both inside and outside in their new enclosure (former Giant Panda enclosure).

Work has also started on the new Zebra enclosure at the top of the zoo.

One other note i forgot: The musk deer now appears to be unsigned.

ZTL lists Edinburgh as a former holding now and was updated yesterday. :(

A very sad loss as this species is also small in numbers throughout Europe with only 13 animals left.
