I was lucky to be able to find out this incredible news a few weeks ago by a keeper that Valentina was expecting.Fabulous news & thank you for sharing. Pileated’s are doing well in UK collections at present - fantastic!
It is rare for gibbons to have twins, but it does happen. Is she a first time Mum? Would keepers step in to hand-raise? It’s a difficult one but I hope she manages.Good news but I wonder if twins is the best outcome though... will she be able to rear them successfully?
She is not a first time mom, she has had multiple offspring in the past.It is rare for gibbons to have twins, but it does happen. Is she a first time Mum? Would keepers step in to hand-raise? It’s a difficult one but I hope she manages.
A Borneo longhouse sounds excitingWhen I went on Tuesday they were doing work on what I believe were marmosets enclosures a few years ago what are near the owls (last time I recall anything in them was 2015) they were also once again blocking of the viewing area for the new howler monkey enclosure (which used to house L’hoest Monkeys). Hopefully all of this new development on this side of the zoo will be public soon.
As mentioned Valentina (Pileated Gibbon) has had twins. It’s amazing news for the zoo and the species. As said in here before, Pileated gibbons are doing very well in UK collections which is great to see. Valentina is a good mom with rearing children in the past. Hopefully she be able to look after twins.
I spent all my time either at Chimpanzee Eden or Gibbon Forest. I got to the zoo at 10AM and the chimpanzees were just being fed and Kibali was being boisterous and displaying to the others by kicking the glass. With Flynn coming over with Josie after to say hello. Jambos group had access to the outside enclosure in the morning and Peter and Tommy had cases outside during the afternoon.
The signage around the zoo is updating. All around the zoo new update signage is going to for different species.
I know I’ve said this before but the CEO, Craig Dunkerley, is making very promising changes to Twycross and from what I have heard he wants developments to happen now and currently is wanting to develop the backside of the zoo which contains, bush dogs, owls, howler monkeys, Borneo longhouse etc.
The Borneo Longhouse is already there...it was built many years ago now after a private grant/donation. It seems rather out of keeping with the rest of the zoo- more like something you might find in a museum, but in recent years its fallen into a state of disrepair anyway and seems to be almost permanently closed. I guess a revamp of the area is what is being talked about here.A Borneo longhouse sounds exciting
Any idea who the sire is?I’m at Twycross and the Pileated Gibbon has a baby!!!!!!
Parents are Helmet (M) and Valentina (F)Any idea who the sire is?
Yes we called in yesterday morning and the drs were closedI’m at the zoo currently and gibbon forest is closed.
I am guessing it’s going to be demolished but nothing has been revealed to the public yet.Is the Owl aviary going to be rebuilt or completely demolished?
Nothing has appeared in planning applications either, nothing for the last few years even. Personally I’d like to see them revamp the whole area down there along with the dik dik, tortoise enclosures. In an ideal world I’d like to see the owls and the old monkey enclosures along side them demolished and replaced with housing for some new large mammal using the bottom rhino paddock as an out side area as I’ve never seen the rhinos use this paddock and only ever recall seeing a single elephant in it once. Thinking about it could this be part of the rhino phase two in the original master plan.I am guessing it’s going to be demolished but nothing has been revealed to the public yet.
