North American AZA/SSP African Lion Population

All, I will be posting in another page as I'm trying to get some information (if anyone has it). I'm in the works of creating a book of all my lion photography at Riverbanks - I've followed Zuri, the male lion for anyone who doesn't know, for quite some time -- approximately, 7 years in fact. I was hoping if anyone could help me find/track down the names of some siblings of the lion:

  • Lion that was born on 11/1/92 in S Africa - transferred to Atlanta on 1/31/94, Sedgwick Zoo 6/12/98, and later transferred to Lee Richardson Zoo 2/27/04
  • Lion born on 1/27/95 in S Africa, transferred to Bakubung, Oklahoma Zoo on 3/28/97, then transferred to Colorado Springs 6/19/2000
  • Two lions born on 8/15/99 in Oklahoma Zoo to Nemesis/Majola - one male went to Memphis Zoo on 2/19/02 then later is at the Audubon since 11/19/08 -- the other went to Omaha in 12/06/01
  • Lion born on 12/26/98 in Oklahoma to Nemesis/Majola - transferred to Tulsa on 1/7/04

Not sure if anyone can dig up some information on these for me - thank you!
  • 0.1 Majola
  • 0.1 Angie
  • 1.0 Bubba and 1.0 Mr. Big, respectively
  • 1.0 Kofi

  • 0.1 Majola
  • 0.1 Angie
  • 1.0 Bubba and 1.0 Mr. Big, respectively
  • 1.0 Kofi

This was a big help, thank you!!! But the first one was not Majola. I'm looking for the female - born in South Africa, transferred to Atlanta on 01/31/94, Sedgwick 6/12/98, and Lee Richardson Zoo 2/27/04.

I've got a few more that I've been trying to discover:

There was another (female) sibling between Kofi and Kalissa that was born on 12/26/98 at OKC. She died two days later on 12/28/98. Was this one ever named?

There was a brother and sister pair born on 4/19/99 at OKC to Tsavo/Nemesis. Male died on 4/19/99 and female died 5/6/99. I'm looking for their names, if possible.

There was a lion born at Sedgwick on 12/14/99 (female) and then got transferred to the NC Zoo on 11/12/2002. Majola was father - I'm looking for the mother's name too.

Lastly, there was a set of two lions born on 11/26/2000 born at Sedgwick between Majola and the NC Zoo lion that died the same day. Names?

Sorry, my mistake, not sure why I wrote Majola, I believe that the female's name is Claserie. The female born on 12/14/99 is named Sala, her mother is also Claserie. As for the others, typically, lion cubs are not named for months after birth, in fact, I wouldn't count on finding names from cubs that don't make it past 6 months or so.

Thank you for that, I really do appreciate it. At this point, I'm just missing one more - born on 11/26/2000 at Sedgwick. Would anyone have that information? Female*

**disclaimer: maybe descendent of Majola and Sala (but this would put Sala a mother at 15 months..is that too young?)

How big are single cubs usually?

iirc, single cubs get really big because they monopolize nutrients in utero and when suckling

Very sad news: Tobias at the Denver Zoo had to be euthanized yesterday at only 7 1/2 years old:

Denver Zoo on Instagram: "We are deeply saddened to share that Tobias, beloved leader of our African lion family pride, was humanely euthanized October 11, 2023, at the age of seven. Tobias had several medical conditions, including inflammatory bowel disease with difficulty digesting certain proteins and chronic kidney disease. He has been under treatment and close monitoring by our Animal Care and Health teams to ensure he continued to have the best quality of life possible while managing his diseases. After a notable decline in his health earlier this week, Tobias was brought to our Helen and Arthur E. Johnson Animal Hospital for an exam. Our Veterinary Medicine team found that in addition to the progression of his chronic diseases, he developed a severe infection that spread to his lung and bones, all of which made his prognosis for recovery and return to good quality of life poor. Our Animal Care Specialists and Veterinary Medicine team made the difficult decision to euthanize Tobias to relieve any suffering given the poor prognosis. Tobias passed peacefully, surrounded by those who loved and cared for him. Our Veterinary Medicine team will conduct a postmortem exam to better understand the full breadth of his condition. Tobias, or Toby as he was fondly called, was born on March 5, 2016, at @buffalo_zoo. In 2018, he moved to Denver at the recommendation of @zoos_aquariums' Species Survival Plan to join our family pride and support African lion conservation efforts. Toby quickly became a beloved member of our pride and settled in wonderfully into his new home in Denver with our female lions: Neliah, Kamara, and Sabi. Soon after his arrival, we were celebrating huge conservation successes for Vulnerable African lions everywhere with the birth three adorable lion cubs: Tatu, Oskar and Araali. Toby’s impact at Denver Zoo was immeasurable and Predator Ridge will not be the same without his majestic, watchful gaze over his kingdom. He will be deeply missed by all those who knew and loved him, including his devoted fans from Buffalo who regularly checked in on their favorite lion. We invite you to share your favorite moments and memories of this sweet boy in the comments below."

A couple of deaths to announce:
1:0 Arthur of the Peoria Zoo was euthanized yesterday due to a decrease in his quality of life following a lymphoma diagnosis earlier this year. He was 18.

"It is with a heavy heart that we announce that Arthur, our male lion, was humanely euthanized yesterday, November 2, 2023.
Earlier this year, Arthur was diagnosed with lymphoma and over the course of the last week, his quality of life had significantly decreased. To honor him at the end of his life, the animal care team made the difficult decision to humanely euthanize him.
Arthur was born September 9, 2005 and moved to Peoria on November 16, 2008. He was 18 years old. Median life expectancy for this species is 16.9 years in managed care.
Arthur met his exhibit mate, Lizzy, when they both moved to the Zoo in 2008. He fathered 4 cubs in 2015 that have been transferred to other Association of Zoos and Aquariums facilities as part of the Species Survival Plan. Lizzy and Arthur were the original duo to call Peoria Zoo's Africa! exhibit home as they both transferred to the Zoo after the expansion. During his 15 years at the Zoo, Arthur has made a significant impact on the staff and has been an icon, synonymous with the Zoo.
At this time, we are processing this sad news, and in due time, when both we and Lizzy are ready, we will be looking to the Association of Zoos and Aquariums Species Survival Plan coordinator to provide a recommendation to revitalize the lion population at Peoria Zoo.
We are asking the public to share their favorite memories or pictures of Arthur with us below! In addition, donations are being accepted for lion conservation and animal enrichment for the Zoo and can be made electronically by visiting https://donations.peoriaparks.org/donations/"

Very sad news, 0.1 Sabi has died at Denver Zoo at age 11 from failing health. Her death might have been connected to Tobias's death last month.
Highly unlikely the two deaths are related, and it is nothing but completely disrespectful to Denver Zoo and their staff to suggest there's a relation between these two deaths without any evidence to back that up. The zoo announced Tobias' death was due to kidney disease, which is genetic and a common occurrence in lions (and domestic cats, for that matter). The article you shared about Sabi stated she had multiple chronic health conditions as well. Unless you know something that isn't public knowledge, then there's no reason to claim there's a relationship between the deaths.
