Folly Farm News from Folly farm

With great sadness we announce the death of Taharqa, our 15 year old Rothschild hybrid giraffe.

Taharqa, affectionately known as Tarqs, joined us at Folly Farm in 2009 when we first opened Giraffe Heights and has been a popular member of our herd ever since.

Our thoughts at this sad time are with all the Folly Farm keepers who cared for him on a daily basis and for whom his loss is most greatly felt. Also, the wider Folly Farm team and our wonderful visitors who will miss this wonderful character.

Please help us celebrate Taharqa by enjoying these photos our keepers have shared of him and by sharing your own memories and messages of support.

Regular visitors will be aware that Taharqa was suffering from a severe tooth infection for a while and, despite the best efforts of our veterinary partners and our zoo team, routine treatment and medication was unable to resolve it. After much consideration, and due to the location of the affected tooth, it was decided an operation to remove it wasn’t in the best interests for Taharqa’s welfare.

It was a major operation that would likely have affected both sides of the lower jaw, cutting through the cheek muscles, and as such required general anaesthesia which is an extremely high risk procedure for giraffes. Our dental specialist was not hopeful of a successful outcome so our ethics committee, made up of members of our zoo team, management, our veterinary partners and external independent parties took the difficult decision to euthanise Taharqa before his quality of life deteriorated further.

New to the collection and recently arrived are a troop of Patas Monkeys, including a male, 3 females and a youngster.

They are currently housed in a temporary enclosure while they are building them a permanent home. I believe they will be housed on where the old Ocelot enclosure once stood.
This species has become rare in UK collections so this is quite a worthwhile addition. Good news.

A male douracouli and 2 male Scottish Wildcats have recently arrived.
ah yes this is exicting isn't and the other day I have spoken to the Zoo Manager of Folly Farm and he said "Scotland is the last UK country to have wildcats roaming free. Wales had native wildcats as little as 100 years ago but unfortunately they were persecuted to extinction! We are using them as ambassadors to promote the protection of other native species in Wales. One day it would be nice to see the return of the wildcat to Wales".

Some sad news

It is with great sadness that we report our long term resident - James the Bactrian camel, has passed away.

Stepdad to young Cletus and enclosure buddy to mum Delilah, James was a huge part of the Folly zoo family.

James was 18 years old but had been suffering with chronic arthritis and his condition sadly deteriorated recently. He received the best care from our experienced animal care team and was being treated by our veterinary partners as well as being under specialist care for his condition, but unfortunately after his health declined and an assessment of his welfare was taken - it ultimately resulted in the decision to put him to sleep.

James was certainly a much loved character - likened by his keepers to a lovable but grumpy ‘old man’ that could take time to warm up to people. He was incredibly curious about anything new and always kept his eye on what the team were doing when carrying out their duties (with an element of judgement so I’m told)! Carrots were also a firm favourite when it came to treat time.

He will be hugely missed by us all and our thoughts remain with James’ keepers at this sad time who have shared some of their favourite photos.

I visited folly farm a few weeks ago and couldn't help thinking how brilliantly themed the Asian Adventure area is! However, I think it could be made even better by getting rid of the rather lacklustre playground there and placing another enclosure there (maybe some sort of primate) and adding asian short clawed otters to the pelican section. What do you think of these changes?
