Chester Zoo Chester Zoo News 2023

Brexit notwithstanding, it didn't seem to take too long to import these, though of course I don't know how long it has actually taken.
I would imagine the process has taken many months, potentially over a year (which is very common in my experience).

2015 1.2
2016 3.1
2017 3.1.1(1)
2018 1.4.1(1)
2019 no data.
2023 2

total bred 8 males, 8 females, 4 unsexed of which 2 DNS. 20 known births

A new female was imported in 2022, so this litter seems to be the first breeding since 2018.

Went to the zoo yesterday and had a great day despite the poor weather but it did dry up as the day went on. There were a few school teen yobs about shouting loudly in the Aye-Aye area and the same guys shouting again at the entrance to Realm of the Red Ape with a little vandalising. Not what you want in a zoo.

The Islands walkthrough aviary was closed off and no idea on why it was.

It was my first time seeing the construction work for Heart of Africa and it is coming on nicely. The steel frame is now up for the new Giraffe house and it is fairly big.

The new education building there is now complete and looks really nice.

I did see Inka the new black Jaguar but didn't see the new Andean Bear.

unfortunately we had the same issue with a group of teenage boys at Cotswold wildlife park shouting in the wolves area , they were with a teacher who was ineffective at controlling them , a shame we moved onto somewhere else

I felt the same when I was trying to view the Aye-Ayes in peace yesterday but these teen boys just had to shout and act really silly, they were so disrespectful in there and at the entrance to Realm of the Red Ape. I had to pick up some cards at Realm that they just threw onto the floor. They had no teacher with them.

I also forgot to mention that I saw a baby Philippines Spotted Deer yesterday.

Are the spotted Deer still under the walkway alongside the painted dog enclosure?

The lorikeets have been there for at least a few months, perhaps even longer... I never commented on them as I often forget that aviary is even there ;)

I saw one in the summer but I couldn't get a good look, this is the first time I've had a good look at them.

Fingers crossed the sifaka survives this time! Those other arrivals are quite nice (especially the Malagasy reptiles) and I hope they will be on show in the near future.

I was wondering if people on here can remember when the Hide over looking the pool was built and can people help me find out which species have been seen in this area please?

Do you have a source for the sifaka? ZTL hasn't been updated yet, and I have no access to ZIMS to corroborate this claim.

Born on 9 September 2023, the male named Hercules stood at just 30cm tall and weighed only two kilograms.

“We have a team tradition of naming newborn deer within the theme of ‘space’ and, given the importance of our new arrival to his species, we decided to name him Hercules, after the constellation of stars.
