Chester Zoo Chester Zoo News 2023

Do you have a source for the sifaka? ZTL hasn't been updated yet, and I have no access to ZIMS to corroborate this claim.

My source does not want to be identified. I also have no access to ZIMS. I don't think ZTL records births.

ZTL does record births - if you click on an entry, it will sometimes say ‘nachzucht’ (German for offspring, I believe), followed by the year of birth and the gender ratio. But with certain species and zoos, there isn’t enough information for this, of course.

Thanks for that, I did not know.

@Alwaysevergreen: Correct. But tell me a better source with free access. Also, afaik, everyone - including brits for british zoos - is invited to update zootierliste to make it more accurate...

I'm not saying there is a better free source, but it's worth clicking on some animals if a rarity etc. I know that there are some smaller collections in the UK, that the lists are quite out of date. I mean if someone wanted to see said animal and it only showed at that collection and it was a smaller zoo, I would be contacting the smaller zoo to see if they still had the animal.

For instance, BCA Zoo in Maidenhead is listed as having Brushtail Possum, Wild Boar, Northern Flying Squirrel, Round Eared Elephant Shrew, Siamese Crocodile and also Turkish Spiny Mice. They have not had the majority of these for the last 2 years. Some of these are rare in the UK, so someone looking on ZTL may see these listed and think I will go visit, yet upon visiting would not see any of these at all.

Obviously some places have some animals off show, so I personally think it would be good if this was indicated on ZTL, or if not on show animals were listed as such. But I go to zoos 3 days a week or so, and write down in a notebook all the animals I see walking around. You may not know how many of each species etc, but I've noticed with a lot of collections, there are any number of animals listed as a current holding in the UK, when they are not.

So then do the later part of my post...

By the way: Some animals on ZTL are/were indeed indicated as off show/behind the scenes ("Hinter den Kulissen").

Appreciated, but if you don't speak German it's not easy to know. When you translate to English, when you click on an animal, it goes back to German, rather than showing that in English, so it's not always easy to see or know that. You also have to click on the animal to see this. Having a section of Current Holdings, Holdings Off Show and Former Holdings, would be more transparent but appreciate a lot of work for what is a free resource site.

On the subject of ZTL I visited Slimbridge recently and when I got back home checked ZTL and realised 52 species were no longer on display, I e-mailed the collection after my visit and as yet (3 months after) have had no reply from the collection.
Of note none of the missing species were even on any signage boards around the collection.
These species are STILL showing as in the collection so please be aware ZTL is only a probable species at collection information page

Funnily enough, I've been informed that some of the people who are directly responsible for recurrent errors on ZTL - for instance incorrectly deleting any species which they didn't see during a visit or which weren't mentioned on the collection website - have historically also been some of the most vocal about the site being inaccurate :p

At the end of the day, the site is only ever as reliable and trustworthy as the people editing it - so the key is to a) be reliable and trustworthy and b) edit and update information yourself as/when needed :)

In tend to update Zootierliste after a visit to a collection with the species I have seen. I also add species that are missing from species list for a collection. I will only remove current holdings if I have been specifically been told the species has moved on or passed away by a member of staff at the relevant collection.

That's the trick I think - only go as far as your actual certain knowledge runs. The problem a while back was people completely removing stuff that they didn't see/find a label for, even if nothing at all suggested the animals in question had actually left the zoo.
