Australasian Zebra Population

When I visited in January 2020, Marty was kept in a separate paddock to the main herd.

That makes sense as there’s 22 months between Duchess’ 2019 and 2021 foals (i.e. not long enough for two full term pregnancies of 12 months). Potentially Duchess could have had a miscarriage in 2019; but a separation seems more likely, especially considering Jupiter could have conceived anytime from early 2020.

They were previously noted to be running an integrated herd in February 2018, with Duchess and Jupiter rejoining the herd within two weeks of her birth (and Duchess conceiving Duke).

Since gestation is around 12 months, Oreo was likely conceived the month of your visit in January 2020 @Osedax!

0.1 Jupiter (Feb 2018)
1.0 Duke (Mar 2019)
1.0 Oreo (Jan 2021)
1.0 Kafue (Feb 2022)
1.0 Unnamed (Oct 2023)

Hamilton Zoo - Zebra Update

Hamilton Zoo zebras have been busy with 29th foal in 15 years

Malawi has left the building! The stallion has been transferred to Orana Wildlife Park. He sired one last foal to Marbles, believed to be a filly; and the other mare (Zalika) is thought to be pregnant.

The zoo will now apparently be taking a break from breeding. I hope they import Grant’s stock when they resume.

The article states the zoo has a herd of seven zebras. It’s unclear whether Okavango and Zambia have transferred out; or whether they remain off display; but the main herd would be as follows:

0.1 Marbles (2003) Shane x Maria
0.1 Zalika (2011) Bwana x Marbles - Pregnant
1.0 Pebbles (2021) Malawi x Marbles
0.1 Wednesday (2021) Malawi x Zalika
1.0 Nguvu (2022) Malawi x Marbles
1.0 Nyika (2022) Malawi x Zalika
0.0.1 Unnamed (2023) Malawi x Marbles

Birth Announcement - Darling Downs Zoo

A Grant’s zebra filly was born overnight, as reported by @Zorro in the Darling Downs Zoo news thread.

Time will tell what the plans are for the 1.1 Grant’s zebra foals born this month (one at ZooDoo; one at Darling Downs Zoo), but hopefully other facilities will be open to acquiring purebred stock in the coming years. Especially Hamilton Zoo, who now has the perfect opportunity as per the above post.

It’s interesting how Darling Downs Zoo have been successful in producing several fillies; while ZooDoo have welcomed a succession of colts

Thanks for the update!

I'd imagine Malawi will be non-breeding at Orana. He'll be joining his son (Kaabo) there who's their only stallion; but will be presumably be kept separately from the current group.

New Zealand Zebra Updates

In addition to Malawi, Okavango and Zambia have been transferred to Orana Wildlife Park.

Kaabo and Kitui are no longer at Orana; but Zelda and Asale remain there. Zelda is actually born 1985 (not 1987).

Orana Wildlife Park:

0.1 Zelda (1985) Unknown x Unknown
0.1 Asale (2009) Bwana x Marble
1.0 Malawi (2012) Zambezi x Zahra
1.0 Okavango (2019) Malawi x Marbles
1.0 Zambia (2019) Malawi x Zalika

Hamilton Zoo:

0.1 Marbles (2003) Shane x Maria
0.1 Zalika (2011) Bwana x Marbles - Pregnant

Interesting news; it seems Orana is moving towards becoming a complete bachelor facility with two females remaining (one of which who’s achieving a worldwide longevity record).

Kaabo was only a young male; and recently arrived too, so I hope he’s still around at another facility. I’m not so sure he would’ve been exported over to Australia (being related to a lot of the zebras over there, and no known facilities being without a stallion). I guess Auckland presents as an option though (as they’re currently without a stallion).

Kitui on the other hand was/is fast approaching her 20’s, which is around about average lifespan for them. Considering her age and the demographics at other NZ facilities, I’d assume she probably wouldn’t have been transferred elsewhere.

It’d be useful to have Orana Wildlife Park as a bachelor facility as Auckland Zoo have an all female herd; and Hamilton Zoo will resume breeding (hopefully with purebred Grant’s) in a few years.

If Kaabo is still alive, I’d say Keystone is the strongest possibility. While the redevelopment of Auckland’s elephant exhibit into a rhinoceros complex could be a game changer for their zebra breeding plans, they were happy maintaining a female herd last I heard; and Kaabo is closely related to all individuals in Auckland’s herd.

Hamilton Zoo have three colts in their herd at present and Zalika could be pregnant with a fourth. It wouldn’t surprise me to see them head Orana’s way in a couple of years. From here, Hamilton may be able to transfer their mares and fillies to Auckland and start afresh with Grant’s imports from Australia.

Monarto Safari Park - Zambezi has died:

Zambezi at Monarto Safari Park has died. Born 2000 at Adelaide Zoo, he appears to have been the second oldest in the region after Zelda at Orana Wildlife Park.

Reported in Monarto’s annual report.
Sad news to hear, but expected considering he was 23 years of age which is the upper life expectancy especially for a male.

He was a well represented male, having many descendants in the regions population through his son Bwana (who sired foals at Hamilton and later Dubbo), and his daughter, Myra (who mothered Storm, Dubbo’s current stallion).

Birth Announcement - Mogo Wildlife Park

A Plains zebra foal has been born at Mogo Wildlife Park to Katali. The colt has been named Subira.

It’s been a decent run of births for the region lately, with two fillies born at DDZ; a filly at Hamilton Zoo; and a colt at ZooDoo.

Wonderful to hear! This would be Katali's first foal; she herself recently arriving from the National Zoo, where she was born.

This calf would also be the first calf of Melako; who was Werribee's previous breeding stallion, arriving last year.

Darling Downs Zoo Birth:

As mentioned in the Darling Downs news thread by @Zorro, another zebra foal has been born to kick off the year. No details on mother/sex as of yet.

My money is on Zara, who previously gave birth in December 2022.

Two additional mares have bred in recent years (Zavannah and Angel), who I suspect were the mothers of the fillies born in Spring 2023.

The high number of fillies being born is good for future breeding. Hopefully we don't see them hybridised in with the current mixed lot.
I agree, although it would be interesting to see where the previous foals/fillies have all ended up. It would be surprising if DDZ has retained all of them, considering the success they've had.

I would hope they've sent some fillies down to Zoodoo as they only one breeding female at the moment.

I believe Darling Downs Zoo has a second herd comprising of a hybrid mare from Monarto and first generation fillies from the main breeding herd. Colts have previously been transferred out.

Werribee transferred two females (one of which died in transit) somewhere by ferry, with Tasmania being a strong possibility. Since Tasmania Zoo has yet to announce the arrival of zebra, I’m wondering if the surviving female went to ZooDoo.

It'll be interesting to see where the colts transferred too. Dubbo apparently have a new stallion.

I do wonder what the intention was of transferring the two females to Zoodoo. There's a chance it was for companionship purposes, but if Zoodoo wish to breed outside of their current mare, there's a possibility that's the route they have chosen to take. In any case, I've contacted Zoodoo too so hopefully we'll get a response asap.
