Berlin Tierpark Tierpark Berlin news 2023

In the Tierpark right now and was wondering where in the zoo the Bawean deer are? I’ve looked up and down the deer area and can’t seem to find them but maybe I’ve missed something?

Edit: And any herps that aren’t in the Alfred Brehm Haus?
Bawean deers are located just where the fallow deer icon is:)

Last time I was there, they were behind Vari-wald and kangaroos.

I think there is a few herps in the south-american primates house.

According to Facebook, Berlin Tierpark received 0,1 Arabian Striped Hyena - making it 1,1 again. So far, there hasn't been any conformation on Zootierliste or official TP platforms, though.

Also, the Asian mixed-species enclosure as well as the former snow leopard enclosure both look like they are (virtually) finished. However, it doesn't seem like they are going to open them right away and there haven't been any official updates on any building project for many months now.

Potentially waiting for a more busy season to officially open?

This could well be the reasoning behind the delay. They didn't make Summer so they could wait for Spring, especially since they don't have anything large for next year anyways.

@Cat-Man The Asian enclosure will have Asian small-clawed otters, babirusas and black crested macaques. As to the other enclosure, nobody knows a thing - for as far as I am informed.

Thanks. That sounds like an interesting mix; can’t wait to see it opened and to see what ends up in the other enclosure!

Apparently, they pretty much finished remodeling the former snow leopard enclosure. Curiously, now about two thirds of the enclosure are virtually hidden behind plants/ bamboo. So I guess they'll put some South East Asian animal in there rather than an African Savannah species (generally, it could be both as both zones merge at that spot). But now I'm even more invested in finding out which species goes in there. Unfortunately, they may well wait until Spring as they apparently will with the new Asian mixed species exhibit. It's just no longer the season for opening new attractions.

Speaking of which: The dinosaur exhibition will be extended for another year. They say it's because it was a huge success. But I also think it may be to fill the gap caused by the repeated delay with the elephant building (not to open before 2025 - possibly later).

It never fails to amaze me that the upper echelons of Berlin management are so against the idea of publishing any form of printed material that they axed guidebooks, the Bongo journal and (judging from my recent visit) even maps now, yet leapt at the chance to publish a magazine-style guidebook for the dinosaur exhibition :p

Completely agree with you, here. They went from loads of printed and online publications to hardly any at all. To be totally honest, I did buy one of the dinosaur guidebooks, though. My young son actually quite likes dinosaurs and they did a decent job with the guidebook.

As for the rest, I still hope they'll print some new Tierpark guides, once they finished the Africa section (I don't think there will be as much shifting around of animals after that and the next projects after that may take some time anyways.

As did I - partially because even a guidebook with only minor relevance to the Tierpark itself is better than no guidebook at all, partially because it means my collection of Tierpark Berlin guidebooks remained complete, and perhaps most importantly of all.... it was the only way to get a physical map of the collection :P

Sadly not holding my breath, given the fact that the 175th anniversary of the Zoo in 2019 would have been a perfect opportunity for a new guidebook or *something* special to be published over there, but alas nothing......

Any hints of how the enclosure is decorated to work out what kind of species it could be?
