Had a nice little visit to Gorge Wildlife Park today, here's the information I received from a keeper there. I highly recommend going, it's a shady little spot up in the Adelaide hills, a perfect place to stay cool on a scorcher like today. Once again I'll mark anything that is primarily speculation with an asterisk *
- Gorge intends to acquire a breeding pair of Caracal when their current male Serval (forgotten the fella's name) passes.
- Gorge wants to renovate the current Serval and adjacent Japanese Macaque enclosures for Caracal ** (indicating to me they plan to phase out both species).
So definitely a while off yet, apparently the Serval is a pain to feed and is rarely viewed by visitors, so is not engaging with the public, rather sad imo because he's a spectacular animal and can't help his reclusive nature.
1. I believe so? I was unable to find them, but I found both the Brown-fronted Capuchin and the Black Capuchin, the latter of which had two small infants in their exhibit. Saying that the area the white-fronted capuchin was in the last time I visited with family from the UK (18 months ago) was under renovation. So maybe they are BOH?
2. Yes they still house two agouti in the macaw aviary, but apparently, they are extremely elusive so are not displayed on the map, my mate's been there 18 months and has only seen the agouti a total of 6 times. (I was unable to spot them)
3. Only minor reptiles and birds, nothing major I'd consider worth placing on the map other than the Agouti and differentiating between their three Capuchin species. On the contrary, they no longer house Patagonian Mara.
1. Yes, Gorge still houses 3 female Coati (No confirmation on the names)
2. The baby spider Monkey is a female, and I believe the name is Kaia or Kyah?** I might be wrong though.
Other Gorge news
- The Otters from Perth have not yet arrived
- One of the Spider Monkeys is believed to be pregnant
- The capybara is due to give birth once again
- When the Coatis pass, Gorge intends to build a second large island exhibit adjacent to the spider monkeys for two species of Lemur. I assume ring-tailed Lemur will be one species, no idea about the second. This plan is all due to overcrowding occurring at Monarto, due to their Lemur baby-boom
