Gorge Wildlife Park Gorge Wildlife Park news

Hi everyone, just a few questions that popped into my head regarding Gorge currently :)

1. Does Gorge still have aguoti? If so, where is their enclosure?
2. Does anyone have a list of all the species held at Gorge?

Cheers guys.

I don’t believe they have Agouti anymore. They were last mentioned on their socials in 2019 and they don’t feature on the latest map (updated December 2021).

Species held at Gorge:

This map gives a decent overview of the species held there:

Also, refer to Post #84 (Page 5) of this thread by @WhistlingKite24 for a more detailed list of their birds (dated 2021).

Ok, thanks mate :)

I should hopefully be visiting next year if they still have coatis and White-fronted Capuchin by then, so will be able to give a full species list.

Awesome! Have fun!

I was there on Wednesday and am fairly sure I saw an agouti in the aviary with various South American parrots.

I didn’t take down a species list.

G'Day guys, does anyone happen to have a full species/inventory list of Gorge Wildlife Park?

The map is pretty comprehensive, but I believe they still have agouti in the macaw aviary (unsigned), and I was wondering if there were any other animals they had they aren't labelled on the map :)

Cheers, and happy new year!

I'm heading to Gorge tomorrow, is there any questions we want answered

I wouldn’t mind knowing timeframes around the acquisition of Caracal, that are replacing Serval. Their Serval is still relatively young and will be around for a while, so interested to know whether they plan to send him somewhere; and if they’ll breed Caracal or just hold a sibling pair etc.

I'd love to know:

1. If they still house white-fronted capuchin, and if so, how many, and their breeding status (can they breed??)
2. If they still house agouti

And this one here might be significantly trickier to find out, but:

3. Are there any species that can be seen there that aren't listed on the map? I heard quite a while ago that they had agouti, but that they were housed in the macaw aviary, and not listed on the map or website. I was hoping to visit soonish too, but also want to know if there's anything I should be on the lookout for :)

I hope you have an excellent visit!

Had a nice little visit to Gorge Wildlife Park today, here's the information I received from a keeper there. I highly recommend going, it's a shady little spot up in the Adelaide hills, a perfect place to stay cool on a scorcher like today. Once again I'll mark anything that is primarily speculation with an asterisk *

  • Gorge intends to acquire a breeding pair of Caracal when their current male Serval (forgotten the fella's name) passes.
  • Gorge wants to renovate the current Serval and adjacent Japanese Macaque enclosures for Caracal ** (indicating to me they plan to phase out both species).
So definitely a while off yet, apparently the Serval is a pain to feed and is rarely viewed by visitors, so is not engaging with the public, rather sad imo because he's a spectacular animal and can't help his reclusive nature.

1. I believe so? I was unable to find them, but I found both the Brown-fronted Capuchin and the Black Capuchin, the latter of which had two small infants in their exhibit. Saying that the area the white-fronted capuchin was in the last time I visited with family from the UK (18 months ago) was under renovation. So maybe they are BOH?

2. Yes they still house two agouti in the macaw aviary, but apparently, they are extremely elusive so are not displayed on the map, my mate's been there 18 months and has only seen the agouti a total of 6 times. (I was unable to spot them)

3. Only minor reptiles and birds, nothing major I'd consider worth placing on the map other than the Agouti and differentiating between their three Capuchin species. On the contrary, they no longer house Patagonian Mara.

Here's a few questions:

1. Are the Coati still around?
2. What's the sex of the baby spider monkey born last year and what is their name?

I hope you have a great visit.:)

1. Yes, Gorge still houses 3 female Coati (No confirmation on the names)

2. The baby spider Monkey is a female, and I believe the name is Kaia or Kyah?** I might be wrong though.

Other Gorge news
  • The Otters from Perth have not yet arrived
  • One of the Spider Monkeys is believed to be pregnant
  • The capybara is due to give birth once again
  • When the Coatis pass, Gorge intends to build a second large island exhibit adjacent to the spider monkeys for two species of Lemur. I assume ring-tailed Lemur will be one species, no idea about the second. This plan is all due to overcrowding occurring at Monarto, due to their Lemur baby-boom

Thanks for this detailed update.

Last I heard, Gorge had four females, so the three remaining would be from the following:

0.1 Gabriella (21/11/2011)
0.1 Indiana (21/11/2011)
0.1 Anabella (25/11/2011)
0.1 Charlie (04/12/2011)

That sounds a similar story to Auckland Zoo’s Serval. The current exhibit affords them too many places to hide and the female is notoriously reclusive. The previous cage set up was more confined, but provided better viewing opportunities imo.

Thank you for the updates.:)

Another female is awesome for the future of the troop, and the breeding pair have now had three successive females in a row.

It's interesting to hear that one of the spider monkeys is believed to be pregnant as they only have one breeding female (Aruba) who gave birth just six months back. I doubt they would've allowed Jake to mate his daughters, so Gorge may have potentially acquired a new female or two recently.

My mate stated that Gorge currently has 9 Spider Monkeys, however, he doesn't work with primates, only marsupials and carnivores.

What are you referring to with these two species?

Gorge has two on-display exhibits for Capuchin.
One is a smallish older exhibit for what are described as "Brown Capuchin Monkey"
and the second larger and newer exhibit has a breeding group of what are described as "Tufted Capuchin". So these might be two groups of the same species? They looked fairly different to me however

From those photos, I believe the so-called "Brown Capuchin" are actually the White-fronted.
