Bioparc Valencia Bioparc Valencia News

I finally visited this park today for the first time and I really loved it! I was able to see all the animals except the otters (I saw a peak of one cuddling hidden).

Has the park ever had cheetahs? I think they are the only "major" iconic African animal missing.
They also need okapis and Cape Buffalo. Maybe honey badgers too

Years ago there was an intention to introduce several species into the collection that are not currently present in Bioparc Valencia. I remember that cheetahs were considered and the intention was to spend a few years with bongos and then acquire okapis. The same was thought with chimpanzees, and then Access to bonobos. But time has passed and it seems that plans have changed, or there is simply no space or intention to fulfill those plans.

I adore bongos, but I'd swap them out in a heartbeat in exchange for okapis. I had a little bit of hope that the park would get them when the last of the breeding population of bongos left the park, but they then brought the current bachelor herd. I guess we won't be seeing okapis in Spain for a while.
Can't say the same about the bonobos, I'd love to see the species in any Spanish park but the current chimpanzee exhibit in the Bioparc is very bland and unestimulating, I don't think it should be exhibiting chimpanzees or bonobos at any point.
Suppose the zoo had the proper space to do anything new. In that case, I'd personally like them to do an Ethiopian Highlands enclosure with geladas and other species fitting the theme (Nubian ibex, lesser kudu, serval, wattled crane, guerezas, Abyssinian ground hornbill,...). It should also have another proper aviary, we are missing out on those...

I had the feeling the chimpanzee enclosure was one of the weakest of the park. What would you replace them with?

They need more structures to climb. They only have a couple of logs and some rocks, the rest is an expanse of grass, a river and a stone wall. Nothing else

Maybe move the sitatungas or pygmy hippos there and mix them with a guenon species to leave more room in the first Equatorial Africa enclosure to the species left there as well as for the drills and talapoins. Maybe keep it for bongos to make room to okapis I guess.

News:
- Cirilo, the park's male Southern white rhinoceros (Ceratotherium simum simum) has passed away. At 32 years old, an advanced age for this species, the death occurred due to the main cause of death in adult rhinos, a gastrointestinal disease that led to peritonitis.
During the routine control of Cirilo a certain apathy was observed in his behavior. A colic was detected and began to be treated immediately, while various diagnostic tests were performed. After more than two weeks of intensive treatment, this gastrointestinal pathology led to peritonitis and nothing could be done to save his life. It is considered one of the most frequent causes of mortality in adult rhinos. During the process, we had the support of horse specialists from the CEU Cardenal Herrera University of Valencia, given that this condition is common among horses and the digestive system of rhinos is very similar.
With the death of this individual the park is home to Nombula and Amy, two females of said species. Amy recently arrived from Kolmården.

Maybe you are thinking of Bioparc Fuengirola, the sister zoo which will be getting an expansion dedicated to species from South America like giant otters, jaguars, howler monkeys, spider monkeys, various fish, birds, and herps, etc.
Well, I know it was going to be one in Fuengirola, but not as big as you say. Are you sure?, jaguars?! I thought it was only about birds. For the other part, in Valencia, i thought it was said recently to be expanded to a camboyan part.

Really a bad new, the last female in coming was there because of the EEP programs of reproduction, now they will need a new male.

Do they get out on morning or evenings? I went to the park like three weeks ago and they weren’t there

The pics were taken last Friday in the morning. Between 10 to 12. In the first round, the individual is resting/sleeping, in the second round, were more active. I think I got lucky.
