Birds of Prey in North America

Pretty sure San Diego hasn’t had Bateleur for a couple months now.

Been gone for about a year and a half now, in fact.

Other things I noted:
- California Living Museum no longer has Ferruginous Hawk or Red-shouldered Hawk, but now has Northern Harrier
- Living Coast DC no longer has Osprey
- The following species are not on display at the following zoos (maybe they're offshow or in bird shows, but I think for these species it is worth noting the status):

Gray Hawk and Ferruginous Hawk at ASDM
Crowned Eagle and African Fish Eagle at LAZ
Palm Nut Vulture at SDZSP

Sophia the Lammergeier at World Bird Sanctuary was sadly euthanized after being found in her exhibit unable to use one leg and her condition worsened, I know they planned on importing a male to try and breed the species but its possible this wont happen now, and thus means the end of the species on the continent

That's a disappointingly short return for a generally long-lived species... :(

yep...I hope they will bring in a new pair, but who knows what there plans will be moving forward, whether they still try and bring in the male they mentioned and source a new female or not and decide to focus on other species.

It's-a me, Liberty! ‍ To celebrate MAR10 Day, our resident bald eagle received enrichment in the form of a mystery block! ✴️ Much like Mario in the Mushroom Kingdom, Liberty needed to use her natural adaptations, like her talons, plus her brain to get the block to reveal its (frozen "fish pop") coins inside! Enrichment for our animals offers at least one of three things: a choice, a change or a challenge. This keeps their minds and bodies active while allowing them to receive new stimulation and exert natural behaviors just like they would in the wild! Luckily, there have been no sightings of Goombas or Koopa Troopas at the Aquarium! | South Carolina Aquarium | South Carolina Aquarium · Original audio

Source? Of both the news and of the bird.

They had uploaded a photo of the bird in question for ID confirmation and it seems to have been removed now. The facility is known for having numerous birds of prey that are rare or otherwise unheard of in NA so it does track. @TheGerenuk it would be nice to have the photo in the gallery for confirmation given the rarity.

I had a look. It was uploaded with a question mark after the name, but there were no comments as to ID before it was deleted again.

In which case I would be very interested to know how ID was reported confidently in this thread if there were no comments on the photo before deletion. From memory the photo did seem indicative of Bonelli's but it is not a species I am familiar with and I didn't get around to comparison.

Great Argus was right regarding the posted and then deleted photo. I'll post it here this time, along with the signage posted on its aviary, both taken on my most recent visit on July 8, 2025.

Thanks for uploading these. It's definitely not an adult Bonelli's, possibly a juvenile? I'm struggling to match it satisfactorily to another photo of a juvenile though. I'd be curious to hear some thoughts.

Juvenile Bonelli's are rufous below, so it's definitely not one (a juvenile I mean).

Pardon me if this is not the relevant thread (feel free to move this post if that is the case), but apparently this is some video footage from around 2017 of “Duncan”, the World Bird Sanctuary’s 1.0 Wedge-tailed Eagle, appearing as an ambassador at the Memphis Zoo:
Zootierliste does not list Aquila audax as formerly present there, but if it’s not a stupid question (and I assume it isn’t), I wouldn’t suppose that birds that have travelled between facilities for demonstration purposes don’t count as having been part of all collections they’ve appeared at?
