What's wrong with North Carolina Zoo?

The bull at North Carolina is a non behavioral bull and the herd they have is multigenerational. The bulls name is Louie, I shared a link as far as the reactions go that some zoochat users have felt about the move.

For example here was @Hyak_II reaction about Louie being transferred to North Carolina 2 years ago
“Stupid move. North Carolina has absolutely, without any shadow of a doubt, completely squandered any breeding potential they had. The absolute lack of an action they've taken on getting their elephant population breeding is absolutely pathetic. They have probably the single most mismanaged heard in North America in terms of breeding. It is absolutely infuriating.”

In other words, they aren’t the greatest with elephant management.

Christie and Zuri have been transferred to Kansas City Zoo!!

Kansas City Zoo & Aquarium on Instagram: "Kansas City Zoo & Aquarium is excited to welcome two African elephants from @hoglezoo They will join a herd of seven elephants, including a bull, Tamani, and females Lady, Lois, Lea, Megan, Tattoo, and Zoe, after a quarantine period. When Hogle Zoo made the decision to find mother-daughter duo Christie (37) and Zuri (14) a larger herd and a male partner, they worked with the Association of Zoos and Aquariums @zoos_aquariums Species Survival Plan (SSP) for African elephants to find the best zoo home. Experts agreed, this is the place! The herd will live together on more than three acres of outdoor space, including a large pool, mud hole, two waterfalls, shade structures, and a variety of substrates for the elephants to explore, interact and train. KCZoo completed $10 million of upgrades to its Elephant Expedition in 2020 and has recently renovated an indoor space for Tamani. Both zoos’ elephant care and veterinary health teams have decades of experience and have been getting to know Christie and Zuri and each other through multiple visits and calls over many months. The teams prepared the elephants for their move through positive reinforcement training and voluntary participation. Trusted animal care specialists from Hogle Zoo will stay at KCZoo for some time to help make the transition comfortable for Christie and Zuri. Give a shoutout in the comments to thank the team members from Utah’s Hogle Zoo and KCZoo. They are working diligently and passionately to ensure the highest level of animal care and well-being continues for Christie and Zuri. Follow along for updates on the African elephant herd! #utahshoglezoo #kansascityzoo #africanelephants #elephants #utah #kansascity #slc #KC"

Hopefully this was the right decision and they finally have calves after Lady's stillborn in 2001

Hm, very interesting. Genetically, Tamani is an awesome bull, and in theory, his social upbringing *should* enable him to hopefully be a decent natural breeder. At 18, he will outsize both cows, and hopefully have the dominance and desire to get them to submit to him for breeding.

I do worry about this slightly however, especially considering neither cow has any prior experience with bulls, and I’m uncertain of how much experience Tamani has with actually interacting with cows in a proper breeding context. Regardless, I’m certain Kansas City will be eager to get the cows breeding as soon as possible, it will have her answer in that regard soon enough. Fingers crossed all goes well, and both girls thrive in their new home!

Nicole was in a really bad shape before her arrival at TES. She had bad front feet/joints and tried to shift her weight on her hind legs to avoid pain in her front legs. The reasons for her health problems are in the past - working as a circus elephant for decades while spending most of her time chained and on concrete flooring. And the conditions at the San Antonio Zoo werent *that* perfect either…. It would be very very unfair to blame TES for Nicole‘s health problems and death.

That is all very true. I think Nicole should have never left San Antonio in the first place because of this. *P.S Nicole was actually an Asian Elephant, not an African Elephant.

Young African Bull Elephant at Maryland Zoo Survives EEHV | The Maryland Zoo

“15 year-old African bull elephant, Samson, has survived an episode of a strain of the Elephant Endotheliotropic Herpesvirus (EEHV6). This same animal survived a different strain of this same virus (EEHV3b) when he was 5 years-old and was the first elephant clinically diagnosed with that strain at the time.”

I believe he is the oldest elephant right now to have test positive for EEHV, if I’m not wrong.

Oh my that would have been bad to lose him! He’s almost full grown so I’m not surprised he survived, because the mortality rate of EEHV is significantly greater in elephants 8 and under.

Callee has done his job!
Two additional pregnant elephants have been confirmed at SCZ, making four total!
We've got BIG news! Can anyone... - Sedgwick County Zoo
Amazing news! Callee’s done such an amazing job; four pregnant cows is just absolutely phenomenal. It will be interesting to see which of the cows are the mothers - hopefully this will be announced soon.

Really awesome to see the amount of success the regions had with the population as of late. Fingers crossed we have some more calves on the way!

It’s official. Literally one calf a month after the other!!

Look at this post on Facebook Log in to Facebook | Facebook
Just to specify, Sedgwick has officially announced two more pregnancies!! Xolani is 5 months pregnant and Arusi is 4 months pregnant.

It shouldn’t be long before their last cow, Zuberi, falls pregnant as well. Like everyone mentioned earlier, Callee has done a fantastic job but I definitely think he could take a break from breeding for a bit at this point considering how over represented he has become with all his offspring and the numerous relatives he has through his father Jackson.
