Harewood also sent a single individual to Prague a year or so ago, incidentally - which raises further questions about precisely how many times they successfully bred the species.
Interesting...the five parent-reared offspring must all be full siblings I presume- from the same pair. The two hand-raised ones must be related too- maybe full siblings to each other and half-siblings to the other five, that's if they are from the other female and the same male.

I seem to remember the supposed 'glaucous' macaw wasn't really the right colour, with no hint of a more greenish tint to the plumage. But the story just seemed to get dropped with no outcome. Nowadays would a DNA test solve it.?

I imagine it would - but interestingly I seem to recall that a case has been made in recent years that the two taxa are conspecific in any case (although still distinct at subspecies level) and until a few thousand years ago formed a cline, with the intergrade populations having been lost in the intervening time. If this is indeed the case, and given the relatively low number of extant specimens to provide DNA samples (I believe there are fewer than exist for Cuban Macaw), on reflection as I write this, I wonder how easy it would be to determine whether or not the debated bird was a Glaucous Macaw from genetics alone?

I strongly think they would indeed have formed a cline, and since became seperated as the intervening populations were lost. They are just too similar (from the appearance of museum specimens and paintings of Glaucous) IMO for it to be otherwise.

I have located the paper which I was thinking about; although largely in Portuguese it has an English-language abstract.

I thought they had already released about 10 last year? So these are just additions to that existing flock?

It is about the ten birds released last year. The link to their website is for the press release from the time. I'm guessing the Facebook post is just a repost for some reason (even the post itself says the photos were taken in November).

Today I visited Paradise Park for the very first time. It has been a collection on my to-visit list for ages but a combination of never visiting Cornwall and living a great distance all have led me not visiting earlier.

I got to the collection at around 12.30pm and I was made aware none of the flight shows were happening due to the high winds. This was expected due to the recent Storm Kathleen bringing lots of rain and strong winds to much of the country. On a high note the weather was pleasant and actually sunny with most of this rain being incessant drizzle. The light at times was rather harsh but I managed what photos I could over my 5 hour visit.

I enjoyed the old feel this bird garden still has and saw most species on display with highlights being the Collared falconets, Azure tit, Palm cockatoos, Lear's macaws, Grey-winged trumpeters & the Great blue turaco. I also felt the gardens looked lovely with the multitude of spring bulbs as well as the fascinating Sago palms & Giant echiums which I have seen throughout my trip in Cornwall.

Overall, for a April afternoon Paradise Park provided a lovely couple of hours with many new and interesting species seen.

Sounds really interesting, love the photo of the Azure tit.

I would definitely recommend a visit. In regards to the Azure tit @Lafone he was a nightmare to photograph with him being lightning fast so that was one of only a few decent ish photos I got. Thankfully a keeper tempted him out of his favourite shrub with a few mealworms and this allowed me to get at least a couple of photos.

Paradise Park have announced the hatching of at least three red-vented cockatoo chicks. Of the ten EAZA zoos that hold this species, Paradise are currently the only zoo that is breeding them.
For several years, enough offspring have been hatched to create new unrelated pairs in other EAZA zoos.

Information comes from the park's Facebook page.

Paradise Park have announced that their group of rescued collared falconets has recently laid eggs for the first time since their arrival in 2021. They are currently being left alone to incubate the eggs, so it is not known if the eggs are fertile yet or when they will hatch.

Are the remaining birds still in the little tropical house and is it 2.1 remaining from the original 4.2? Fingers crossed for them, fascinating little birds!

Paradise Park has announced that all three of their pairs of hill mynas, which were rescued from the illegal bird trade in Europe in early 2020, have successfully bred this year. Chicks fledged at the park in recent years have now been spread out to four other UK zoos in order to create a viable captive population for the species in Britain.
