Zoochat Big Year 2023

Birds
It was nice to finally see the most common species I was missing for Illinois. Partially this is because siskins are irruptive and they haven't had an irruption here since the very beginning of when I started birding. They really are a much better-looking bird than I had expected from field guides and photos, more like a nicely streaked winter plumage goldfinch than the slightly yellow, drab house finch I thought they'd be.
244. Pine Siskin (Spinus pinus) (Lifer)

Some previously seen species:

Fish
12. Striped shiner (Luxilus chrysocephalus) (Lifer)

Insects/Inverts
296. Giant euscoma moth (Euscoma giganteana) (Lifer)

297. Garden fleahopper (Mircrotechnites bractatus)
298. Yellow-legged pleuroloma (Pleuroloma flavipes)
299. F-winged barklouse (Graphopsocus cruciatus) (Lifer)
300. One-spotted Stink Bug (Euschistus variolarius)
301. Common striped woodlouse (Philoscia muscorum)

This might be it for me this year, but hopefully I find a short-eared owl or other nice wintering species before then.

Amphibian
While looking through my lists, I surprisingly didn't include my most commonly seen amphibian for the year
6. American toad (Anaxyrus americanus)

Insects/Inverts
Some final insect IDs
302. Carolina grasshopper (Dissosteira carolina)
303. Yellow case-bearing leaf beetle (Pachybrachis tridens) (Lifer)
304 Soybean stem borer (Dectes sayi) (Lifer)

and finally, I've made an informed decision on my shrew ID.

Mammal
23. Northern Short-tailed Shrew (Blarina brevicauda) (Lifer)

Totals: 23 (m), 244 (b), 6 (r), 6 (a), 12 (f), 304 (i)
Bold = Personal Best, by far my best for birds and mammals, but I slacked off when it came to fish and inverts. For herps, I think I just didn't visit the right locations.

Overall, a great year, although definitely a much more front heavy one. The three days in California were probably the three best in my life, with a great number of lifer mammals and birds. I hope everyone has a good new year, and that those traveling have a productive and safe time. Hopefully next year brings some fun new species and good views of familiar favorites to us all!

Here is my slightly late list for the year. Overall 2023 was a brilliant year for wildlife watching for me with many exciting wildlife sightings. I broke my previous bird year record, mammal year record and amphibian year record, with the bird record being broken by a significant margin. Unfortunately I did see a lot of animals that I was unable to identify to a species level, namely an enormous amount of fish in Lifou, several skinks in Vanuatu and several bat and snake species in Australia. Despite this it was still an awesome year for animal watching with many spectacular species seen.

Most hotels have access to amazing snorkeling sights on their grounds. Even my hotel, which lay close to the city with lots of traffic in the water, had a very rich sea life. I don't have a camera to record what I see underwater, and it's of course impossible to snorkel with a book or your cellphone, so for someone who lacks an underwater camera, species id and creating a species list may be a bit hard. I luckily have a pretty photographic memory, so I could snorkel, and later while on dry land, scroll through the Inat checklist for the region and write down the species I know 100% I saw. I also used the checklist to familiarize myself with the sealife so that I could often know what I was looking at while in the water. My actual fish list is undoubtedly a bit longer, since I only write down the fish I know I saw with 100% certainty. The only species I wrote down as lifers are the more distinctive species I have no recollection of seeing during my previous visit to Egypt. This because it's hard to know what I have seen before, and the previous hotel I stayed at was located in an areas with much greater diversity. So I have likely seen most species already.

Where were you in Vanuatu?
I was in Port Villa. I saw the honeyeaters on the very outskirts of the city feeding in a fruiting tree in somebodies backyard. I was on a trip with my family on a cruise ship, and because of this I was not on the islands for very long, hence why my bird list is a bit strange. I saw a majority of birds on Lifou as I was on a remote beach surrounded by a large amount of forest, while in Noumea and Port Villa I was mainly in the city and because of this saw very little in Vanuatu and mainland New Caledonia.

I would be extremely unlikely to have seen Vanuatu Honeyeaters in Port Vila. On the larger islands they are largely birds of hill or mountain forest. I have not seen any records of them from Port Vila.

This is my final list for the year. 2023 was probably the most prosperous Big Year I have ever had, and I am very happy with my final results. Not only did I finally achieve my long-time goal of reaching over 100 bird species in one year, but I also broke my records for the mammals and the herps. I am very proud of what I accomplished, and I remain hopeful that last year's fortune will carry onto this year.

"With the end of the year fast approaching, will I be able to crack 700?"

The answer... is yes!

First off, I realized I had yet another omission from my Kenya trip. A bird my party was very confident we'd identified correctly, but I was skeptical so left off of my list intentionally until I got home and could verify. Only, when I eventually went through my photos, I'd forgotten they were for the ID purposes not just record shots and move along thinking I'd of course included the bird *facepalm*

692) Mourning Collared Dove Streptopelia decipiens

NOW this is the last of the Kenya updates (probably)

Now to (most likely) close off what has been a truly unbelievable year for me, and one I will struggle to ever top, I was gifted with one final surprise: a family vacation. Only last month, my father surprised my siblings and I with the news that he'd been saving for a couple years to take us all on possibly one last family vacation before my siblings graduate and enter the boring adult world as I have. The location he chose: the Dominican Republic.

Now, keep in mind this was primarily a family trip to a resort, so I kept my wildlife watching time restricted to birding on the grounds of the resort, one half-day outing, and a visit to the National Zoo during our day trip to Santo Domingo. So don't expect my list to look anything like @Najade's from earlier this year! I do want to thank him, though, for helping me get in touch rather last minute with a birder-friendly English speaking driver and a great bird guide in Juan Cespede for my outing. Sadly, mammal watching on this trip was kept to a single incidental sighting, with no time for bat caves or solenodons (the zoo's solenodon also died about two months back so no luck there either :( ).

All of this said, I think I did really great with my limited time here and my restrictions. In three and a half days I amassed 29 new species for my year list, 22 of which were completely new lifers for me. Technically, I do not leave until tomorrow afternoon, however I don't plan to leave the resort to go birding again and I think I've probably maxed out my species potential for the resort grounds. With that in mind, I figured in the interest of me having downtime now, I'd go ahead and post my list as I really don't expect there to be any more additions.

I have to say, I don't think I've ever done as intense of birding as I did on this day. The hawks proved themselves tricky to find, so my guides took me into the karst montane forests, hiking all the way up a steep muddy incline, to find a pair perched in a small tree at the very top. It's hard for me to think of a tougher (and certainly scarier) workout than ascending--and eventually descending..--that terrain. Thankfully, the tour only got easier from there, ending in a rather nice boat tour through the mangrove forest out to Bahía de San Lorenzo. Typically lots of swallows, martins, and even sometimes bats can be viewed flying from the caves along the bay. Unfortunately, yesterday was not one of those days. Cannot complain in the end, though!

I see everyone's getting one last big push for additions in at the very end of the year! Very exciting! I have but one new ID from my last morning in the DR:

33) Common House Gecko Hemidactylus frenatus

I plan to post a review of my year in the coming days.

There's currently quite a lot of action bird-wise in CT, especially in the southwest corner of the State. Unfortunately, a certain virus will be keeping me locked inside my apartment (and mostly my bed) for a while.

I would be extremely unlikely to have seen Vanuatu Honeyeaters in Port Vila. On the larger islands they are largely birds of hill or mountain forest. I have not seen any records of them from Port Vila.
I may be wrong but I was pretty confident of my ID. When I first saw the birds in question I initially thought they were a friarbird species as they reminded me a lot of little friarbirds. The birds had a curved beak and were significantly lighter and slightly larger than the dark brown honeyeaters I was seeing everywhere in New Caledonian and Vanuatu. eBird suggests they have been found relatively close to the city. If you think this identification is unlikely though I will take your word and remove it.

On a side note, is anyone sure if the lorikeets on mainland New Caledonia are rainbow lorikeets, coconut lorikeets or are both species present on the island?

I had been meaning to update for a while, and then realised I hadn't posted anything this year...

In June I spent a few weeks in Sabah, Borneo - my first trip outside of Europe! Most of my time was spent on a university field trip in the Danum Valley, however I also spent some time on the Kinabatangan River and a couple of nights in Kota Kinabalu. Otherwise, everything else is from various locations around the UK (but mostly within the Midlands).

I haven't had chance to add scientific names for any of my UK sightings, but happy to clarify any species if needed.

I will remove Vanuatu honeyeater from my list due to possibility of misidentification. My bird list however remains 185 due to a new edition.

I would also like to replace common garden skink (number one on the reptile list) with delicate garden skink (Lampropholis delicata) due to a misidentification.

Which sites on eBird are you looking at?

I visited Egypt for the 2nd time back at the end of October and got a few new birds. The hotel I stayed at the first time was teeming with birds—nice species like hoopoes, bluethroats, red-backed pipits, and Sardinian warblers—in the hotel gardens and lawns. And a wide array of gulls, terns, and waders on the hotel beach and in the tidal mudflat.

The first time I visited Egypt I wasn't a serious birder and didn't record the sightings. But since the memories from the birds I just noticed effortlessly were so pleasant, I thought I was in for something real good. Unfortunately, there were barely any birds in the hotel, probably because there was barely any habitat for them, the beach was very developed, there was little room for birds, and there was no big tidal area. The hotel gardens and lawns were also small and lacked cover for the birds. The main reason for the lack of birds was probably because the hotel was close to the city, as compared to the previous hotel, which was like 40 minutes away from town with nothing but desert and a few scattered hotels.
