After a 6-day, 3,366 km (2,092 mile) journey from the Mendoza EcoParque, 0.1 Pocha and 0.1 Guillermina arrived at Elephant Sanctuary Brazil on May 12, 2022.

Global Sanctuary for Elephants | Facebook

Pocha was the first to be loaded off the truck and given access to one of the stalls at the Elephant Care Center. After a few hours, Guillermina was loaded off the truck but because Pocha was still uneasy about leaving the safety of the crate, Guillermina was given access to Yard 1. An hour after Guillermina was unloaded, Pocha walked all the way out of her crate and into the stall. Shortly thereafter, GSE staff were able to move Pocha into the adjacent stall. Guillermina’s crate was then moved to the Elephant Care Center where Guillermina was given access to the same stall Pocha initially was. Guillermina has begun to take her first steps outside the crate.

Guillermina or Guille as she is known is full of energy and learning how to be a herd member. She is special friends with Maia and Bambi but spends time with all the elephants except Lady, who prefers to stay by herself though is becoming less nervous of other elephants. She came to the sanctuary with the worst feet that the founders had ever seen -maybe that makes her insecure around other elephants. She gets treated every day for this, and she likes to walk over the length and breadth of the sanctuary, she is much more relaxed these days and seems content. Pocha tragically and suddenly died a few weeks after her arrival, her autopsy found that she had an unusual form of TB that hadn’t shown in any of her mandatory medial tests before she travelled from Argentina to Brazil. Guille was immediately tested and thankfully had not contracted the disease. Being the special animals they are, we wonder if Pocha held on so long purely to care for her daughter at Mendoza Zoo, and then the first few weeks at the sanctuary, and when she felt that Guille was settled in her new life there, beginning friendships with other elephants and learning a new life, Pocha allowed herself to go. In the few weeks they had together there both Pocha and Guille were very vocal, it was all so different from the pit at the zoo. They showed all the signs of being very content. For her part Guille slowly found her feet through the care of the other elephants, now, roughly 1 year since Pocha’s death her youthfulness and high energy are bringing new playfulness to the grandmother eles especially Maia who lost her life long companion Guida and spent many months on her own without desiring other elephant company seems to have taken Guille under her wing. All 6 elephants are well and stable and their new lifestyle suits them perfectly. Tamy, Guille’s father at Mendoza has recently begun training with the protected contact method and after 1 month is now presenting his feet which are in a neglected state with very long toenails. When he accepts more human contact he will have his full medical checks done. He is currently alone, he is 53 years old and his series of keepers didn’t know correct husbandry and left him alone for much of the time during those years, and learnt to fear him in latter years. However his trainers are delighted with his progress over the last 2 months and he shows no aggression towards them. It is hoped that Tamy will finally be able to join his daughter Guille at Global Sanctuary for Elephants Brazil one day. Areas of land have had the necessary fencing for male elephants installed as well as a barn and treatment area. Kenya the lone African elephant at Mendoza is due to come also and more land will need to be fenced off for her.

Do you know how many male elephants there are in south and Central America?

He reached a respectable age probably one of the eldest bulls in NA
Exactly, this and other stories and data about the memorable ages and longevity of elephants in captivity need to be put out there.

Let the AW / ARA horde eat their age old vent that elephants don't do well in captivity and are better off in the wilds (show me wild elephants that reach that age nowadays in the wilds and populations that are safe from habitat destruction, killing and poaching by us humankind)!

That makes sense.

I see Vance’s first six male offspring were castrated: Big Boy (1983), Smokey (1984), Luke (1985), Bo (1987), Caesar (1987-2006) and Ned (1987-2009); while all male offspring born from 1988 onwards were not. Many of these were sold to circuses such as Ringlings, who presumably wanted to breed from them.

The castration process in elephants is invasive and risky but if done correctly, is straight forward enough. It’s often carried out before the age of five. The six bulls listed above all survived the procedure.
A rather mind boggling intervention given that we are all worried for Asiatic elephant reproduction in zoos nowadays. No surprise that given these strategies at the time the US Asiatic elephant population is in the state it is in nowadays. The maintenance of bull elephants (allowing them to prosper in socially apt elephant social structures) in US zoos needs a totally different approach and complete rethink.

I think he is the oldest bull on record in North America. Dahlip recently died at 56, and Rex at OKC is currently 56 too. Thai at Houston (currently 59!) is also trailing Ted's record too.
Really, it would be worthwhile to check up all data on the longevity of these and other older range elephants in captivity in North American zoos.

Just a reminder: this is the Latin American elephant thread. So, this and other comments pertaining to north of the Mexican border elephants would place it more accuretaly in the North American (Elephants) threads.

0.1 Kim (WILD × WILD) 1980.00.00

However, these numbers are not accurate as 5 (0.5.0) elephants have an uncertain status. These elephants are 0.1 Ada and 0.1 Adalis at Parque Zoológico Nacional de Cuba, 0.1 Pamy at Bioparque Estrella México, and 0.1 Honney Ball and 0.1 India at Africam Safari. Any information that could validate the status of these elephants would be greatly appreciated.
I would appreciate if you could do with a new 2024 update on the elephants in zoos in Central and South America. Thanks in advance for your efforts.

I agree! We're definitely beginning to see a lot more older elephants in captivity (especially bulls).

I am pleased to say that indeed three calves were born in 2021 a male calf to Bolita

The Africam Safari operation almost single-handedly has proven the case for why ex situ conservation breeding of African elephants is valid and should continue to be a relevant part of African elephant conservation globally.

We should hardly be swayed by the rather fundamentalist approach of some activist groups that seem to be bend on invalidating ex situ conservation breeding in the global management of threatened species. While they remain quite active on the CITES animal trade networks and have been partially successful in getting a ban on import/export (mindboggling this may be as there are legal provisions for captive-breeding and import/export for ex situ conservation within the CITES - legal framework that are underused).

In this respect, I have been very dismayed how lately both North American and European policy decision makers, COP/CITES national gremia and the entire media seem to fail to see the wider picture here and that COP meetings have been hijacked by one issue groups (that effectively provide next to no support for in situ conservation).

In the case of these AW / ARA groups their message is rather outdated, keeps citing data from a study that is 20+ years out of date, is demonstrated to be rather selective and unscientific about data collection and usage for their objectives and doe nothing to conserve wild elephants populations. Effectively, the - legal within the CITES regulatory framework - animal trade to ex situ accredited facilities has been so limited and is peanuts in numbers compared to the figures for the extant wild African elephant population, even if you divide these by individual regional regions within the Continent and by relevant ESU units across their natural range in Africa.

You’re right, a lot more consideration is given to the rearing of socially normal elephants, especially bulls. So many bulls (both wild caught and captive bred) grew up without the presence of an older bull to mentor them; and were deprived of the opportunity to observe bulls mounting cows and other reproductive behaviours.

While AI is effective in negating these issues, the Australasian region particularly is keen to move away from AI. I had the privilege of having a conversation with the elephant team at Melbourne Zoo and they all spoke of the advantages of natural breeding - for efficiency and cost effectiveness; as well as social dynamics and education of younger herd members.

I think he is the oldest bull on record in North America. Dahlip recently died at 56, and Rex at OKC is currently 56 too. Thai at Houston (currently 59!) is also trailing Ted's record too.
No, Hans at the Houston Zoo is the oldest bull on record in North America. He was 63 years old when he died in 1979 (1916-1979).

Great video on Ely and Gypsy and how there relationship has grown. But what really caught my eye is where did Zoofari get two juvenile males named Charly and Harry. They do mention they are working with Africam Safari so they probably came from there.

Charly & Harry are from Africam; arrived last year and they were renamed. Formerly they were Sarabi & Hoop respectively.
