I’m going this April. Is there anything I should know? Any tips on getting to see the rarities - dholes, vontsiras, etc? I’ve missed dholes at Miami and Minnesota, so I don’t want to miss them again.
I've only been once, but the dholes were quite active in the late morning/early afternoon, and the design of their exhibit makes for fairly easy vewing. April should be a good time to see them, since it's usually not very hot yet then. I didn't get to see the vontsiras. Good luck with your trip :)

I don’t know if the monorail will be open by then. If you’re species hunting, you don’t want to miss the monorail.

I know, that was the part I was most looking forward too…unfortunately since I’m going to see family I can’t go later. Is there a way to view the animals off the monorail?

The Markhor and Himalayan Tahr can be seen from the Asia Parking lot and can be accessed from Wild Asia or the path between the Himalayan Highlands and African Plains. You might be able to see the animals in the first field of the monorail (Blackbuck, Chital, Barasingha, and Bactrian Deer) from an outdoor lookout in Jungleworld (although this view is limited and weather dependent.)

By far the biggest frustration about bronx zoo. It would make you laugh if you didn’t already cry.

@Brayden Delashmutt take some solace in the fact the monorail moves too quickly to see anything anyway. And since you have family in NYC there’s always a chance you can go back. Make sure to explore New York plenty whilst you’re there - it’s by some distance the best city on earth!

Hi! I’m a regular and am there almost every week. By April, the dholes should be out for the day vs. right now when they’re inside most of the time due to cold. Around 3:00-close, they become pretty active and pace a bit as it gets closer to their time to go in for the night. If you can catch them right as they get up from their naps, they’re so playful!

As for the vontsiras, I almost never see them during the main part of the day, but when I circle back before I leave nearer to closing time, I never miss them. They’re always pretty playful late in the day.

I also recommend you don’t miss the mouse house! Lots of really cool and rare smaller mammals there like giant elephant shrews and cloud rats. There is also a cloud rat exhibit in Jungleworld, but that one is very hard to see. In the sea bird aviary building, you’ll find a Guam kingfisher as well as a kiwi.

A few misc. species that I always love to check up on are the seriema, palm nut vultures, Père David’s deer, tomistomas, ebony langurs, wadlrapps, and lesser adjutant storks.

Enjoy! There is so much to see and do!

Thank you. What are the conditions like for photography? Do I need to know anything in advance as far as, say, photography in the dark?

Thank you, I’ll try.

I will…does anyone know if the zoo plans to allow viewing for monorail animals off the monorail sometime in the future? It’s always confused me why the entire exhibit is just by monorail - and San Diego’s Asian plains is now the same way…

It does not appear this way. The zoo is currently working on Aliens Among Us, the 2nd floor of the World of Birds, and whatever they’re doing with the Pheasant Aviary; After that, I’ve heard rumors of repairing the Monkey House, making a Latin America exhibit, and improving the area around the Bison, none of which are fitting for any of the monorail species (although these are just rumors and none are confirmed.)There’s little space for a secondary exhibit for any of the monorail species besides potentially the Tufted Deer or Babirusa. The animals on the monorail have some of the best habitats in the zoo and I remember seeing the zoo just recently updated the monorail. If there are plans to change the monorail or move species around, it likely won’t happen well into the 2030s and perhaps the 2040s.

Thank you. I don’t want to take this thread off topic, so I’ll make it quick…what exactly is “aliens among us”? Also, would improving the bison area involve adding more North American fauna?
