Franklin Park Zoo Franklin Park Zoo News 2024

I'm not sure if this has been mentioned about the nyala, but Franklin Park Zoo made this reply to a comment on a Facebook post today:
"Sadly, our other male, Blue, passed away last fall... We all miss him very much. But we are currently introducing new nyala to Kondoo behind the scenes. These things take time, but we'll keep you posted!"

I asked a volunteer about this when I visited a week ago, but apparently the reason they're not on exhibit together is because the nyala were way too rowdy around the river hogs, and are kept separate for safety concerns.
ironic, i always see about suids being the rowdy ones

Suids usually are unruly; however, male lowland nyala are notoriously aggressive. I’ve known of them to kill red river hogs in similar set ups, one killed an okapi at Blank Park, and they usually end up killing each other in bachelor herds, too.

It's one of those instances where I'm wondering if it would be a good idea to start opening up the unused hoofstock areas just so both can be on exhibit at once, though costs might get in the way of that.
Something like that should be a priority for the zoo. Having two species alternate in an exhibit is a disservice to the visitors. I visit several times a year, and I have yet to see nyala except for a glance from a distance in a back area. With all the open space, I hope the zoo can find a way to have them on exhibit daily, especially with the new arrivals.

Maybe nyala could have that exhibit, and the red river hogs could move to a smaller exhibit in the zoo. Or maybe that exhibit could be divided in two.

Yes, but the yard in back is very difficult for the public to see.
I wish they would divide the main exhibit so that both species could be on view.
Alternatively, there appears to be an old abandoned exhibit that could be utilized to the right of the kori bustard.

I visited today, and, for the first time, I finally saw a single male nyala on exhibit. He is magnificent.

How did the other male Nyala perish?
They have 2 male Nyala in the barn introduction to current male from first pair that lived per fabeook comment. Nyala seem to be plenty if one die and 2 more show up.

The clouded leopards should be an interesting addition (one of my favorite cat species btw), though it is sad to see the ocelots go after being on exhibit for so long.
hope they use the timbers they used for gorilla grove for the cats to break up the concrete rock walls
