Don't understand your problem here, if you actually read the article YWP specifically say that Poznan Zoo did an amazing thing rescuing them from Ukraine and claim no credit for getting them out. Why shouldn't they publicise the fact that they are now in the UK and in much better surroundings than they have had to be held in elsewhere.
As to a PR stunt, it may well be that The Mirror helped with what was no doubt an expensive operation (as happened before with the Romanian rescue), who is that harming?

I don’t share your view that the lions from Romania were better off staying where they were. I don’t see the issue with zoos getting any publicity they can. I would take issue with them lying to get it of course, but it doesn’t seem they have.

I’ve seen no article where YWP suggest they went to Ukraine.

The lions will have a nice place to live at the end of the day and lots of people will enjoy seeing them. And perhaps reflect on the wider cost of what people do or learn something about conservation. Or not. But overall I can’t see a loser here.

Please show me where I say that the Romanian lions were better off staying there, I was just pointing out that they could have stayed in Romania with improved conditions,all that this move did was show the Romanians was get out of your depth and someone else will get you out of trouble,yes ywp gave them a wonderful life, but that could have happened without moving to the other side of Europe. What ever happened with the rescue of the female polar bear in Mexico,oh yes nothing because that was never going to travel halfway round the world,it was all about getting ywp in the news.
 
As a general example - literally the first article I found when searching on Google for the story - here is a BBC article which definitely paints Yorkshire as the heroes of the story, reducing the involvement of the keepers at Poznan who actually visited Ukraine to "nine months in a holding facility in Poland" with no other details given.

If you compare the BBC story to what was originally published in The Mirror, they have literally lifted the quotes etc from that article. If they then choose not to mention the bit that YWP did say about Poznan doing an amazing thing and rescuing them originally from Donetsk I don't think you can blame them for that - I seriously doubt YWP have that much influence over the media.
I'm struggling to understand why bricks are being thrown at the place for this.....
 
It’s hardly a bad news story and I can’t paint YWP in a negative light for having rehomed some lions who look like they needed a new place to live when YWP had space. I can’t see any direct evidence YWP are lying about it - and publicity and positive stories about zoos seem like a good thing to me.
 
YWP has posted an article on their own website which has plenty of praise for Poznan. I get that it might seem to some that they are taking all the glory but the article gives the complete story as far as I can tell. This rescue story would never have been complete without another zoo taking the lions off Poznan's hands. Despite the great work of Poznan, the space the lions were in there was not suitable and not many zoos have an purpose built lion enclosure waiting to be filled like YWP does.

You do have to take a hat off to the people who rescued the female lion and kept her safely in Kiev and then helped with getting them out of the country. It’s selfless stuff to be looking after animals like that - this and the info on Ukraine zoos in general in the media and highlighted on zoo chat reminds me it’s quite something for zoo keepers and staff going about their jobs to care for animals in such terrible conditions. Not to take away from people in any other job or anything else in Ukraine - it’s just a courageous thing to do.

Absolutely, it's been top work from everyone to get to this stage, it would have been easier to leave all the rescued animals to die than to save them but some peoples passion for animals did not allow that to happen. I hope that the lions at ywp can live long happily, notably the cubs that have their whole live ahead of them.
 
I find it sad that there are negative comments from a minority of posters. I think it is a great thing that these poor lions are being given a wonderful chance for a new and species appropriate life at YWP. There are many people and organisations involved in this story and thanks must go to all who helped in the journey from their origin in Ukraine to their final destination in Doncaster. Well done everyone and here’s hoping they have a lovely peaceful life at YWP.
 
With Chester Zoo’s Roloway Monkeys being put on show. It made me wonder how many Roloway Monkeys does YWP have? From what i understand the breeding male passed away.

My problem is that ywp are all about pr for them and screw the rest of the zoo world, some of us still remember the problems they caused there colleagues in Denmark years ago, with the wonderful misleading pr statement that they put out at the time.
