Malayan Tapirs at Twycross Zoo
I have extracted the following from Annual Reports 1981 , then 1987 through to 2007 . Where the species is mentioned in the brief animal reports I have used this information also .
In 1981 there was a pair and a young female Peggitty which I think was their daughter . The pair died and a male brought in had a respiratory infection that infected the female .
There was a pair in 1987 ( I do not know if there were any changes between 1981 and 1987 ) , the female was treated for a skin problem in 1988 . There were births in 1989 , 1991 and 1993 but all appear to have survived less than 30 days .
In 1995 there were 2 arrivals , 1 death and 1 departure but nothing in the text to explain movements ( possible 1 animal moved out for treatment then was returned ) . A pair remained at the end of the year .
This pair remained until 2000 when the female died followed by the death of the 22 year old male in 2001 .
An 18 month old male arrived from Port Lympne in 2002 was euthanased with a rectal prolapse in 2003 . A young female from Nuremberg arrived in 2003 .
A male - presumably Colin - arrived from Heidelberg in 2007 .
I would hope that Twycross do not request another male to replace Colin , rather that they send their breeding female to a collection with better facilities for this rare and rather delicate species .
