Twycross Zoo Twycross zoo

Still no news about a new male Gorilla?

The younger 'group' have had no male for almost exactly two years now... the older two females have had no male since Samsam died last autumn. I feel sure there must be at least one in the pipeline for them though...

On ISIS, it lists 0.1 Malayan Tapirs, Have Twycross sent Colin the Newish Male to another zoo or Tapir Heaven?

ISIS records are the responsibility of the collection , I do not see how 1.1 Malayan tapir can change to 0.1 without some reason , doubt if Colin would have been sent elsewhere .

That is a real shame , Twycross must have lost a lot of this species over the years .

I would be interested to know exactly how many Malayan Tapirs Twycross have actually kept during their History. Often there has been only one there, sometimes two. It seems there have been a number of replacements made with this species.

At what point does an EEP coordinator say enough is enough? I understand that respected zoos have some degree of influence, but I wonder if there is a stage at which a particular collection becomes viewed as a drain on the captive breeding program?

Malayan Tapirs at Twycross Zoo

I have extracted the following from Annual Reports 1981 , then 1987 through to 2007 . Where the species is mentioned in the brief animal reports I have used this information also .

In 1981 there was a pair and a young female Peggitty which I think was their daughter . The pair died and a male brought in had a respiratory infection that infected the female .

There was a pair in 1987 ( I do not know if there were any changes between 1981 and 1987 ) , the female was treated for a skin problem in 1988 . There were births in 1989 , 1991 and 1993 but all appear to have survived less than 30 days .

In 1995 there were 2 arrivals , 1 death and 1 departure but nothing in the text to explain movements ( possible 1 animal moved out for treatment then was returned ) . A pair remained at the end of the year .

This pair remained until 2000 when the female died followed by the death of the 22 year old male in 2001 .

An 18 month old male arrived from Port Lympne in 2002 was euthanased with a rectal prolapse in 2003 . A young female from Nuremberg arrived in 2003 .

A male - presumably Colin - arrived from Heidelberg in 2007 .

I would hope that Twycross do not request another male to replace Colin , rather that they send their breeding female to a collection with better facilities for this rare and rather delicate species .

Affirmative and agreed. It is best for the Malayan tapir female to go to a well seasoned tapir keeping zoo with experience of successful breeding (even with the S.American lowland species.

What zoo collection would be suitable: I would tip for Chester Zoo (it would certainly fit the collection also)!

Chester used to keep them but don`t think they ever bred them, not sure where they would but one if they did get one.

thanks for the information, Bele.

With this record, and the poor accomodation they have, I certainly think they should not keep this species anymore and that the female should be transferred away. To Port Lympne?

That would be an excellent option. The female at Twycross is - by my knowledge - unrelated to the PL bloodlines.

Does Port Lympne have a breeding male Malayan tapir now ? The young male who fathered the latest calf died before it was born .

2 things from the BBC video:

1) It sounds like the snow leopard exhibit is going to be huge from what the director of the zoo says on the video. Does anyone else think with their well known secretive nature that most of the time visiting this exhibit will be taken up with actually seeing the leopards, if they're in view at all.

2) Quite worrying that a Vicuna is referred to as a 'camelid type thing' :)

Does anyone know if the new Asiatic Lion/ Dhole enclosure is what the guide book refers too as the 'Sri Lankan Experience'?? Looks like whatever this experience is it will be very close to the elephant enclosure, so close the water feature will be shared between the elephants and the other enclosure.

No, don't worry Twycross, you couldn't have used that space for an elephant bull and sited the lion enclosure in the next field
