I don't think Twycross would go out of any of their four great ape species. They are a massive thing for Twycross, the guests love seeing them and they are a huge thing for marketing 'Only Zoo In The UK To House All 4 Great Apes'.

I was also told that a new exhibit was 'In the planning process' for the future'. I was told this in the New Year, though as we know with zoos anything can change.

The 4 great ape species kept at Twycross are:
Bornean orang-utan (8 UK collections)
Western lowland gorilla (9 UK collections)
Common chimpanzee - no subspecific status (12 UK collections) and Western common chimpanzee (9 UK collections)
Bonobo (only UK collection)

Twycross only has 1 species of orang-utan and 1 species of gorilla
 
Been debating asking, but with all the baby news: I visited April 4, and missed the gelada twice. Is it possible they were off display due to the birth?

Had a thoroughly enjoyable day out at YWP today in the very warm weather. It was pretty busy but fortunately the large space spread people out a bit - after 4pm it got a lot quieter.

Someone should have mentioned sun protection to a large number of visitors; by the end of the day some people looked as if they had been griddled.

Was nice to see the new lions out in the outside enclosure nearest the house on the rhino paddock side. Although the website mentions they are only out until 12pm they were outside until after 3pm and one of the keepers mentioned this is a regular thing as the two female lions have later / overnight enclosure access. After 3pm the two original females were let out into the rear enclosure on the near side of 'lion country' so was good to see them all in one visit. There was a lot of noise and hostility while the lions were changing over, which was unsurprising but caused some visitor excitement. I assume the plan is to eventually allow them all to be outside at the same time (in different enclosures) as with the previous lions. The lion area was very busy visitor wise evidencing the excitement new animals generate.

Lots of animal activity generally despite the heat with the polar bears and giant otters making the most of their pools. The area around polar 2 now feels very empty (obviously the camels are up there but the area is essentially a massive play area without the bears so little reason to go up there) but the main polar bear space had lots going on and the bears were play fighting and mucking about with their canoes.

Ever since I mentioned I found seeing the giant otters outside challenging I have had consistently excellent views - I shall try that with other animals moving fowards!

The rhinos were shut away all day which was a bit of a shame, but as I have only seen them outside once it was not unexpected. The calf was visible on the CCTV repeater near the lechwe so that was nice to see.

Was good to see the new coppery titi monkey out and about in the Amazonas walkthrough - all the small primates were wonderfully visible and active. An hour skipped past in there.

Highlight of the day was the female leopard and cub out right at the front of the enclosure not long before closing, offering some great views. I hadn't managed to get views of the cub since she arrived so it was awesome to see her. Beautiful cats.

Was great to see the sealions as usual. They were split between the two areas with the younger ones in the top nursery pool. Not sure if there was something particular going on (there was training in the top pool in the morning which was fun to watch) but they remained split up and the gates between the enclosures shut all day.
 
Bit of a last minute question, we have gift vouchers and wanted to go this Sunday or Monday, but we're on a motorbike (saving for car and all that YAY) and the weather looks awful on the websites. It's supposed to rain where I am now according to the websites but it's very sunny, so we wanna just wing it maybe over the weekend.

Can we redeem them in the morning of the visit or do they have to be redeemed a day before?

Have never had a voucher (have the lower membership) might be a good idea to give them a ring and check. It might be pretty busy though the weather might out a few people off, the last BH I went was a bit full on!
