Noticed a few changes today the gate between the two okapi enclosures was open so my guess is one of the okapis have left. Also there was a male crowned lemur kept inside seperated maybe leaving not sure wether it’s the adult or youngster tho (if anyone knows why that would be great)
 
 
Do they have six howlers then? There seemed to be one on it's own in the right hand enclosure, as well as the five mentioned when I was there a few weeks ago. Or do they have access to both sides of the enclosure?
 
I seem to remember the howlers having access to the anteater enclosure and the enclosure on the right. Howlers are extremely territorial and if they did have one on its own because it had been kicked out of the group I’d imagine it would have to be held elsewhere in the zoo.

I've seen them in both sides - I would guess it's down to management on a daily basis which is where but at least once the monkeys have seemed to all have access to both sides.

I understand Chester sending their homeborn(?) young female to YWP for mating with an unrelated male. But why have YWP sent their breeding female to Chester via return, given that they(YWP) have their own proven male? Is it related to the housing at YWP not having room for two(seperate) females?

Here's what the park have said re the Okapis, look like they will get Ruby back once pregnant:-
"Our original okapi, Ruby, has temporarily moved to Chester Zoo, where she will be introduced to their breeding male, Stomp

Our male okapi, Mizimu, has recently relocated to London Zoo to play his part in the vital breeding programme."

I have read that. Mzimu is the two and a half year old offspring of their (YWP's) pair. He isn't their breeding male, who is still at YWP. So the question remains why have they sent their female to Chester. My guess is YWP haven't got the housing for two females as well as the male.

It doesn't really make any sense - if it's to get their female pregnant, then why not use their own bull? If it's to give space for the current pair to breed, why say temporarily in the press release? The other option is that Stomp has had another breeding recommendation from the EEP, and so Yorkshire are donating a female to be used...but Chester has a number of their own females and surely Yorkshire would want to use their own male regardless. Them stating it's a temporary measure makes me question whether it's a space issue.

On the subject of Mzimu - once he reaches breeding age, he should breed with Oni in London. He's a very pretty boy

Edit: OK so based on later replies, there's no longer a bull at YWP. So they've sent the female away to get up the duff with Stomp to bring her back pregnant I guess
