Wildlands Emmen Wildlands Adventure Zoo News 2024

Six harbour seals, two males and four females, arrived from Zoo Neuwied today. After renovation of the seal enclosure in Neuwied, five of the seals are supposed to return. One young male will stay at Wildlands.

In Wildlands, the seals will soon move into a new enclosure. The former Nortica Theatre will be converted into a seal enclosure named 'Dock 16'. The main route is going to be passing through the theatre and the enclosure will have a Scandinavian harbour theme.

In a podcast about Wildlands made by a regional broadcaster, the Wildlands spokesperson told that the last Siberian red squirrel (Sciurus vulgaris exalbidus) will soon leave the zoo. After this, the squirrel enclosure will be renovated and enlarged. It will then house a new species, the Swinhoe's striped squirrel (Tamiops swinhoei).

Visited Wildlands yesterday and as expected, very little has changed.

A small portion of the wooden deck over the sealion exhibit has been removed to allow better viewing of the Californians. Both doors of the old sealion theatre are now permanently open and it’s “rebranded” as a seal exhibit. Which makes it look odd, as it’s clearly a theatre fallen in disuse.

The siberian squirrel was still “on exhibit” (as in signed but not seen).

I also missed asian elephant Timber, but I think he was in the only behind the scenes exhibit.

My kids still adore the place, mainly for it’s playgrounds and although I always enjoy myself, the ghost of what could have been still haunts me :(

Two new species for Wildlands

A male Javan mouse deer arrived, that will be allowed to free-roam in the Birdy bush section of the greenhouse, a female will also arrive at a later date

In the Butterfly temple they're planning on releasing a pair of Superb fruit-doves. They've also been working on introducing red-legged honeycreepers here.

A new African lion male has arrived at Wildlands. The almost 3-year-old male arrived on May 8 from the Czech Republic. Behind the scenes, he will be introduced to the three lionesses in the coming period. The hope is that he and the oldest lioness will provide offspring, she is genetically more important than her two half-sisters.

I am glad that Emmen is slowly clawing back territory as of old. Javan mouse deer are a nice addition (ex Artis I suppose ...?)! Where in the tropical hall?

The bird additions especially chuffed about ... for the moment it cannot yet be enough. The more diverse the tropical hall bird species the better!

His name is Maison. He is said to be from Safari Park Dvůr Králové where he was born in July 2021.

I expect the parent bird is sitting on more eggs?
Great breeding achievement ... A first for Emmen and/or the Netherlands?

The post by Wildlands did mention at least one chick, so perhaps more will come.

According to ZTL this species was first bred in the Netherlands by Burgers' Zoo in 2020, but ZTL does not mention earlier breeding at Wildlands.

They have nested before, and laid eggs. As Wildlands had to put up a sign warning visitors that the ibises may act aggressively because they were defending their nest. But I'm not aware if they actually hatched successfully

A second chick was spotted by visitors yesterday.

The first breeding success in the Netherlands, as mentioned, was at Burgers' Zoo in 2020. The first breeding success at Wildlands was in 2023, when two chicks hatched.
That is good news. Do you know how large the Dutch population of the Madagascar crested ibis is? Both zoos have just the one breeding pair?

I've only seen two at a time in both zoos, but Burgers' animals don't show easily. This is supported by ZTL, but that info is a bit outdated so I'm not entirely sure
