North American AZA Southern White Rhino Population

Toronto zoo, Kifaru the nearly 5-month-old white rhino had been introduced to the outdoor habitat with her mom Sabi. The rhino group would be separated into two. Sabi and Kifaru. Zohari and Tom(sire of Kifaru). Kifaru is a male so he might be leaving the zoo when he is older. I hope for a female rhino calf.

1.0 George will be leaving the Houston Zoo for an undisclosed AZA accredited facility in a few weeks.

My guess would be either SDZSP or Disney because both are currently without breeding male white rhinos and have multiple breeding age females.
The SDZSP is not without a breeding bull. They have 29-year-old “Bwana” from the Ellen Trout Zoo.

Said bull was known by his original name J. Gregory (Spike) and has since been transferred to Sacramento Zoo in September 2023.

That is incorrect, they are two different bull rhinos. J Gregory was NOT renamed Bwana upon arriving in Sacramento, Bwana is the bull rhino who was at the Ellen Trout Zoo for the past 25 years, and arrived at SDZSP from the Ellen Trout Zoo in April (I just forgot about him when I posted about George).

I stand corrected (Rechecked): in early April bull Bwana got transferred from Ellen Trout Zoo in Lufkin, Texas to San Diego WAP.

Sorry, @Nile Hippo Expert, I confused 2 zoos (one of which is only a keeper of bachelor rhino group).

Also, ABQ Biopark will receive 38-year-old cow Mashile from the Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo as a companion for Bertha.
Chopper the Rhino moves out of ABQ BioPark.
Not sure if this move may have occurred, but 2 rhinos at Omaha were separated on Monday (8/12/24) which is unusual. One rhino was out in the main rhino yard. The second rhino was in the barn and was popping it's head out cautiously into the small sand yard. Potentially a new rhino already there?

I think it’s possible that there are actually two new rhinos in Omaha and that Mashile has already left. One of the new ones could in fact even be Chopper!

Unmentioned in this thread thus far, St Louis plans to have white rhinos at their wildcare park.
It looks as if they intend to have a breeding herd, but I don't know from where or when they will
acquire them. I would expect movements within the next couple of years. Don't think they have had any whites for at least 60-70 years.

thanks. I'm sure they must have been out of date on that. I was working at the St. Louis zoo the summers of 75 and 76 in the concession stands. I spent time looking at the animals virtually every day that I worked and there were no white rhinos. They may have owned some that were out on loan however. Certainly was no place they could have been stashed

I received an email from the St Louis zoo librarian. White rhinos were last displayed there in 1973.
