Am I reading that right that a 12 day old cheetah was transferred half way around the country?

Two cubs were born initially, one died shortly after birth. The mother's milk ended up drying up, so staff pulled the cub and have had it on a bottle while searching for an appropriately aged litter to foster it to.

They found out that Cincinnati had a mama cheetah with two cubs only a day younger than the "orphaned" cub. A private piloting service with an eye towards supporting conservation offered to fly a staff member and the cub to Cincinnati for free. Cub was successfully fostered into the Cincinnati litter.

A commendable expeditious project to ensure a cub with no good prospects - and probably genetically important to the population - was rescued and got a surrogate mum across the country.
The cub being accepted into the new family is testament to apt husbandry experience. Well done!

The cubs' mother, Zuri, is apparently the most genetically valuable Cheetah within the AZA Cheetah population. So yeah, no wonder the staff at Wildlife Safari moved heaven and earth in order to get him fostered out as quickly as possible! Hope the little dude grows up to be a strong, handsome male who successfully sires cubs of his own.
