Twycross Zoo Twycross Zoo News 2024

I was thinking more about the rewilding of the chimps to be honest. Gibbon Forest, Tigers, Rhinos etc

Okay so rhinos a rehash of the elephant enclosure only really a modified fence round the enclosure not really a new development.
Tigers yes right not paid for by the zoo directly so I'm not sure it counts as a zoo project.
As for the gibbons yes a good move for the zoo but ran out of money and was cut back and things added when they had a few quid to build them.

We hear a lot from Aspinall about re-wilding, but it is interesting to hear that Sharon Redrobe was doing it with Twycross chimps. I have visions of them playing the piano in the African jungle...
Could you perhaps give me a link, so I can find out more...?

I think this reference is to getting all their chimps into one large group in the 'Chimp Eden' new building, rather than any 'rewilding' to Africa. No Twycross chimps have ever made that move.

Thank you, I thought not - but really didn't see how a patch of grass surrounded by a concrete wall, could ever be described as 're-wilding'...!

I'm really interested to know who paid for the Tiger development, if the zoo didn't?

Who built it and who has a ten year matainance contract at the zoo, always look for the bigger picture, particularly when it comes to Twycross and the excellent CEO they employ with no previous experience in the roll.

Thanks for the info. I can't really pass judgement, given I don't have the facts. It's interesting to hear, though. Is this a fully substantiated fact, as far as you're concerned?

Yes, @Pertinax is correct. At the time the zoo referred to it as rewilding. I.e. integrating the chimps to be one group and moving away from the humanisation aspect, which impacted many of the chimps. Sorry for any confusion.

Does it really matter, so long as the zoo keeps evolving and moving forward?

HOW can integrating the chimps to be one group and moving away from the humanisation aspect on a patch of grass surrounded by a concrete wall - EVER be described as re-wilding?

Please see the comment above. No need to be so rude.

I've not seen personally, but been told the European pond turtles have moved from the Flamingo pool to the former otter enclosure.

Also noticed recently, enclosure work and new signage being put up saying Macaw bird next to the Vasa Parrot in the Parrot section of birds.

Are the macaws new? I saw them the other day but can't remember what the sign said and can't see it on the website. There were two birds. Only got this photo

I am visiting on either Sunday or Monday for the first time. What are some important things I need to know or any species that are must-see? (I am definitely going to see the bonobos)

Update on the Chilean Flamingo flock:
Recently the keepers have drained the pool to replicate the drought season for the flamingos and laid new sand down in the hopes they will breed. Twycross has partnered up with Slimbridge in hopes to increase the size of TZ's flock depending on how well Slimbridge do this year breeding their Chileans will decide if Twycross will be sent some new indiviudals. The breeding season ends in September so fingers crossed for chicks.

They moved the European Pond Turtles into the former Otter enclosure. I was able to see one basking on a log.

The old Varigerated Spider Monkey enclosure is being refurbished. They have removed the back wall (mesh barrier layer visible), removed the plants and furnishings they have also started to work on 'Kanye' the L'Hoest Monkeys outdoor enclosure. 'Kanye' is set to leave the zoo soon.

In the Gruffalo aviary (not the finch aviary) there are currently Hamerkops, Red-Creasted Turacos, Speckled Pigeons and Demoiselle Crane. Im not sure what the future is for some of the bird species at Twycross but hopefully they stay around.

A new pair of the Red-Fronted Macaw have arrived: Log in to Facebook

“The pair recently arrived at Twycross Zoo from Edinburgh Zoo and Welsh Mountain Zoo thanks to a carefully curated move as part of a European zoo conservation programme, designed to help protect and preserve endangered species and support their wild counterparts.”
It's wonderful to see such a fascinating and endangered species arrive at Twycross, fingers crossed they'll be boasting hatchlings soon enough!
