ZSL Whipsnade Zoo ZSL Whipsnade Zoo News 2024

@ZooNut23 thank you for confirming there used to be a seal enclosure as I tell my OH this every time we go (both mid 30s, both lived within 15 mins of the zoo our whole lives, so we both have a lot of childhood memories of it) and he repeatedly tells me I'm getting confused and the zoo had sealions! I am so vindicated!
(Obviously they also had sealions!)

There's a great scanned photo of one of the seals in the now otter enclosure and some discussion on the inhabitants here.

Lovely afternoon up at the zoo, Whipsnade at its windy best (regular visitors will know what i mean!). Saw plenty including the Blesbok calf, the Warty Pig Piglets (Warty Piglets? We had this discussion at the zoo), lively otters and the Kookaburra's. To my shame it seems that I have either never seen one before or completley forgotten as they were much bigger then I expected!

Some earth work was going on in the Aardvark enclosure and a sign on the Blue Crane enclosure seemed to imply that nesting was happening.

Sounds like a good move given his record with females. It's a good space for a single male like Miron, he looks a handsome cat. Hopefully he will have a long and happy life at Whipsnade. Look forward to seeing him when he goes on exhibit / the zoo announces he is out.

Edited to add I assume they will aim to have him out on exhibit shortly, as the summer event features a tiger weekend for international tiger day as part of the animals of Asia theme weekends for the summer holidays

Summer days out at Whipsnade Zoo | Whipsnade Zoo

Come and join in our celebrations for International Tiger Day for a whole weekend!
It’s International Tiger Day on the 29 July but we’re celebrating our paw-fect Amur tiger all weekend! Join us for special tiger talks, crafts, games and challenges! Can you help rangers identify individual tigers by their stripes? Or maybe you want to find out which tiger you are most like! Join us in celebrating our amazing Amur Tiger as we make your day that little bit more stripy!

On Saturday 27 July, WildCats Conservation Alliance will also be here to help us celebrate, sharing news of their fieldwork projects working with wild tigers in China, and some of the equipment they use to track tigers in the wild.

Where will tiger weekend take place?
Head to our Asia section to get involved with all our activities and to find out what ZSL is doing to help these amazing animals in the wild.

Why should we celebrate International Tiger Day?
The tiger is vulnerable to extinction. Amur tigers are listed as endangered in the wild with there estimated to be between 265–486 in the far east of Russia. There are two critical threats to Amur tigers; hunting and deforestation. ZSL are working to protect Amur tigers in the wild, using camera traps to track poaching on tigers, and through building relationships with people to increase the awareness of protecting these fantastic animals.

Good BBC article with a short film piece on the team at Whipsnade rearing some newly hatched flamingo chicks having received the eggs from Chester zoo.

edited to add the zoo also formally welcomed Miron with some pictures on Facebook (with people posting about others moaning he wasn’t visible immediately) and confirming he’s out and about in the enclosure

The American flamingo flock at Whipsnade held 35 individuals (more males than females), yet is effectively breeding. There should be 2 young American flamingo in the flock and 5 hatchings for the entire year.

Anyone take an interest or has additional information on Whipsnade's flamingo flock history and background?

Wonderful day as always at whipsnade.. saw the new baby crane chick so cute! Along with baby girl giraffe who was confined to a smaller area outside and inside so couldn’t go running around..
the new tiger is visible at times but again he is very anxious according to the keeper as he can smell the previous tiger in the enclosure so hasnt ventured more than 10ft from his home..but they are confident he will give it time, as he will be the solo tiger given his history!
No elephants pregnant currently but they have been given recommendations to breed again from Dona/Gita and Beth !
Cheetah were mainly hidden, same for the lions.. meerkat babies and warty pig babies all look strong and healthy!

Great news that recommendations have been given. Beth may still be a little young to breed but should be good to go in the coming years. It's also nice to see Donna will be breeding again with natural intervals. If she conceives now, we should hopefully have another calf from her come 2026.

It's also intriguing Karishma wasn't mentioned. It's been eight years since she last had a calf so it would be crucial she conceives asap. She's still a prime aged breeding female, so maybe the fact she's from a well represented line is preventing another recommendation being given with two surviving calves already.

Excellent day at Whipsnade today, warm but rainy and a bit overcast but lots to see. There were apparently 2,000 schoolkids visiting today but I found it all quiet, even earlier on.

The Langur and Babirusa house was closed for some work on the surrounding paths

but both species made up for it by being outside for much of the day (I was visiting the crane chick a few times, so a trip around monkey forest each time seemed a good idea). The Langurs were hanging about in the trees and enjoying the sun and stayed when the rain came down in sheets. I'd only seen them spend time outside for feeding before dashing back inside on previous visits, so it was good to see them making full use of the space, including for a group nap in the sun not long before closing.

Got good views of new tiger Miron who is a fine hefty looking cat. It's been a while since we have had a fully grown adult male tiger at Whipsnade and he certainly has some presence. He was roaming about and didn't seem concerned about using the whole enclosure.

Was good to see the pool full with the new pump system running

whip16thjuly2024tiger.jpg

and the water filling in the pool without leaking out into the old waterfall area. Having seen Rob Cadd's excellent Miron in the pond photos, I was looking forward to seeing it working, having watched the construction. The outlet at the top is covered in by rocks and the pleasant sound of flowing water makes for a nice background while waiting for the tiger to wake up.

I've found the pool a little folorn in recent years (though watching the three brothers rolling their ball around the dry basin was fun) as it filled a bit with rain water or had a congealing muddy mess in the bottom, so it's good to have it back on form.

Elsewhere it was great to see the red crowned crane chick coming along nicely and the Visyan warty piglets were showy in the space outside the house, with the rest of the family racing about in the main paddock. The blue cranes are sitting on their second round of eggs, so hopefully there will may be a good result this time round. The young rockhopper penguins are now at the half fluff half feathers stage which was fun to see.

The camels have also shed their winter coats and they were right near the fence on the monkey forest pathway. In the forest area the male Anoa was paying court to the female but she wasn't having much of his mating attempts.

Seeing the wolverines being fed and watching the bison rolling around in their enclosure was also fun.

Had a good view of a kestrel hunting in the long grass before the penguin pool picnic area too, always good to mix in a bit of wildlife.

Nilo the male Red Panda is back, he's in the old Red Panda enclosure on his own.
Saw that on Saturday but was confused as to why a red panda was in the tree opposite the red panda enclosure.. presumed they had split up the mum and cubs but wonder why he back as didn’t another zoo want him for breeding?

From Bristol? Any idea why he was sent back ?

Perhaps he was swapped for the cubs with the intention of pairing him with Ruby again.

.

I suspect they may have been shut outside as the house was closed?
