Prague Zoo Praha Prague Zoo News 2024

BEST TIME TO SEE THEM
  • Garnett's galago - around 9:30 when they get fed some insects
  • Geoffroy's cat - no idea, I have no luck with them either, but they have kittens 2 months old
ARE THEY STILL AT THE ZOO/WHERE CAN WE FIND THEM
  • Goodman's mouse lemur - usually just next to senegal galago, but were bts last I visited
  • Bush thick-knee - walk-though lory parrot aviary
  • Ashy woodpigeon - Sečuán house
  • Little bittern - Sečuán house (species is really hard to see there)
  • Striated heron - african aviary in "Ptačí mokřady" (behind shoebills)
  • Boat-billed heron - second southamerican aviary in "Ptačí mokřady"
  • White-throated piping guan - second southamerican aviary in "Ptačí mokřady"
  • Peruvian thick-knee - second southamerican aviary in "Ptačí mokřady"
  • Crested oropendola - first southamerican aviary in "Ptačí mokřady"
  • Blacksmith lapwing - african aviary in "Ptačí mokřady"
  • Red-winged starling - african aviary in "Ptačí mokřady"
  • Oriental bay owl - probably bts or not present, havent seen them in years
  • Buffy fish-owl - aviary between penguins and vultures, next to Pel´s fish owl
  • Wonga pigeon - mixed with black cockatoos (Darwinův kráter)
  • Blue-faced honeyeater - probably bts
  • Bateleur eagle - old large vulture aviary (behind Rákosův pavilon)
Thank you so much!

I think that some tropical owl was located in one of owl aviaries next to tigers/elephants - but I may be wrong or it wasn´t oriental bay...

You are probably right. If that species is exhibited there, it would be bts during winter and on-show only in summer. (I tend to visit the zoo usually out of season)

That's where I saw them (assuming you mean the same area where they keep the Ural owls). However this was in November 2023, which wasn't ages ago, but things seem to move pretty fast at the zoo.

They were still there in June of this year. They were rather hard to spot though

If I ever go to Zoo Praha, what's the best route to take to have a good general coverage while seeing some of the zoo's notable treats?

I ask because I looked at a map of the zoo and it seems quite mazy

Hi, I'm in Prague soon. I hope no one minds but I have somequestions:
- What rarities should I look out for (I know about Javan leopard, Palawan leopard cats, Chinese Pangolin, Shoebill, Lears Macaw).
- Is it feasible to be based in Prague and visit Zlin or Pilsen Zoos?
- Is the Prague reptile zoo place still a thing?

I have 3 days. Is there another notable collection in Czechia?

Thank you in advance

There are far more rarities at Prague than would be convenient to list here :p browsing through Zootierliste will be of assistance to you, but to get you started with a few off the top of my head:

Pel's Fishing Owl, Buffy Fish Owl, Brazilian Merganser, Horned Screamer, Brown Hyena, two pure species/subspecies of Galapagos Giant Tortoise, Amur Leopard Cat, Enigmatic Leaf Turtle.

- Is it feasible to be based in Prague and visit Zlin or Pilsen Zoos?

It is extremely easy to visit Plzen as a daytrip from Prague. Zlin is significantly more difficult, unfortunately.

- Is the Prague reptile zoo place still a thing?

Terárium Dubeč has been closed for quite some time now.

There are a large number of other notable collections in Czechia, including Dvur Kralove, Ostrava, Jihlava, Liberec, Olomouc, Chomutov, Brno and Hluboká to name only collections I have personally visited.

There is no route recommended by the zoo or taken by most visitors. Good way to prepare your first visit is to print out the zoo map beforehand, mark your target species on it and create your own route.

All visitor paths combined make 10 km (6,5 miles) and elevation difference between the lowest and highest point is a little over 50m (165 ft). You can see everything in a (full) day unless you have mobility/fitness issue.

Few tips:
- make pangolins one of your first stops of the day because that space is lit from 9am till 10am
- skip hippo and elephant houses, respective animals spend their summers outdoors
- skip farm animals area
- skip the long path on slope between bisons and vulture aviary, the only exhibit it offers is native snakes and they are hard to spot there

Thank you for your reply.

Do any of the above have any species rare in captivity or world class exhibits? I did look at Liberec but Golden Takin have done so well there, they've spread all over the place.

What makes Zlin difficult? Distance? Lack of trains? I can overnight there. Would you say it's worth the inconvenience?

Thanks again

There's certainly plenty of rare and unusual species within those collections - to name but a few, Southern Aardwolf and Thick-tailed Galago at Dvur Kralove, Javan Ferret-badger at Brno, Transcaspian Urial at Chomutov, Afghan Uriel and East Caucasus Tur at Liberec, and Coyote at Olomouc.

As far as exhibits go, probably the most notable/significant are the massive safari reserve at Dvur Kralove, the gallery of Czech palaeoart at the same collection, and the mixed exhibit for bears and langurs at Ostrava.

It's pretty much a full-day zoo and public transport from Prague to the city of Zlin takes a long time and several transfers, with the zoo itself being several miles outside the city. Much easier to reach the zoo from Vienna all things considered.

Javan Ferret-badger at Brno

While the zoo stil keeps a pair of these according to their 2023 annual report, the species seems to be permanently bts, unfortunately.

In other news - the pangolin pup is already permanently on show. It develops without problems and its mother Run Hou Tang is calm thus the zoo has removed the screen that blocked visitors views.

Thank you. If I go I'll have to stay in Zlin. The Ferret badgers are tempting but they seem to be off-exhibit.
