I don't recall a female named Biwa being at Melbourne, let alone within the region. Unless she was re-named, I would assume she passed soon after transfer. Do you know which facility she was transferred from?I am inquiring about the status of Biwa, the female Goodfellow's tree-kangaroo who was imported to Melbourne from Japan approximately 10 years ago. Biwa was considered genetically valuable as she was born to wild parents. Could anyone confirm whether she has passed away?
She was transferred from Zoorasia in Japan. According to a 2016 report, she was moved to Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary, which is known to have a male with extensive pairing experience, because she was unable to breed at Melbourne Zoo.I don't recall a female named Biwa being at Melbourne, let alone within the region. So this female could be 'Mwali' (born 2005) who presumably came from Melbourne and lived at Currumbin until her death a few years ago.She was transferred from Zoorasia in Japan. Wonderful news!0.1 Pearl, a four-year-old Lumholtz’s Tree-Kangaroo has arrived at Wildlife HQ from the Tree Roo Rescue and Conservation Centre. She was found kilometres away from rainforest in Herberton on the Atherton Tablelands and taken into care, where it was discovered that she has poor depth perception and focus issues, making her unsuitable for release. She will be paired with Wildlife HQ’s male Patrick who is another rescued animal with poor vision - reported on their FB page.
It will be nice if this pairing would be successful and Australia can now build up an ex situ conservation breeding program for the Lumholtz's tree kangaroos (along with the Goodfellow's from Papua).Wonderful news!@Kifaru Bwana
