Australasian Tree Kangaroo Population

0.1 Ori from Healesville has been quietly transferred to Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary. She has already been introduced to 1.0 Torembi (born at Taronga in 2017) and they are on-show together. Exciting news to have a new pairing of tree-roos for the Goodfellow's.

0.1 Buna the Goodfellow's Tree-Kangaroo at Adelaide Zoo has died, leaving the zoo without tree roos for the time being. Buna was initially born in 2006 at Krefeld Zoo, Germany and unfortunately didn't contribute any joeys to the regional population so it seems. Adelaide Zoo has a long history with tree-kangaroos of course being well-known for rearing a tree-roo in the pouch of a rock-wallaby. That joey is now the breeding male at Singapore - confirmed via email.

I am inquiring about the status of Biwa, the female Goodfellow's tree-kangaroo who was imported to Melbourne from Japan approximately 10 years ago. Biwa was considered genetically valuable as she was born to wild parents. Could anyone confirm whether she has passed away?

I don't recall a female named Biwa being at Melbourne, let alone within the region. Unless she was re-named, I would assume she passed soon after transfer. Do you know which facility she was transferred from?

She was transferred from Zoorasia in Japan. According to a 2016 report, she was moved to Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary, which is known to have a male with extensive pairing experience, because she was unable to breed at Melbourne Zoo.

So this female could be 'Mwali' (born 2005) who presumably came from Melbourne and lived at Currumbin until her death a few years ago.

Updates:
  • 1.0 Goodfellow's Tree Kangaroo has been born at Healesville to 1.0 Bagam and 0.1 Mani.
  • the Australian Reptile Park is a new holder of Lumholtz's Tree-Kangaroo. No further details at this stage.

It's good to see the lumholtz's population growing and seemingly taking of. Hopefully we can get some decent captive breeding results going. It's a nice species that could do with more people knowing about them and there need for conservation.

0.1 Pearl, a four-year-old Lumholtz’s Tree-Kangaroo has arrived at Wildlife HQ from the Tree Roo Rescue and Conservation Centre. She was found kilometres away from rainforest in Herberton on the Atherton Tablelands and taken into care, where it was discovered that she has poor depth perception and focus issues, making her unsuitable for release. She will be paired with Wildlife HQ’s male Patrick who is another rescued animal with poor vision - reported on their FB page.

Wonderful news! :) @Kifaru Bwana

An international import has finally occurred for Goodfellow's Tree Kangaroo giving some hope for the population. 0.1 Kiwai has arrived from Jardin des Plantes, France where she was born. She will be paired to 1.0 Kombai (b. 2015 at Currumbin) at Ballarat Wildlife Park to create a new breeding pair - reported on social media.

The Australian Reptile Park is a new holder of Lumholtz’s Tree-Kangaroo. A male named Jasper is now on-show - reported on their FB page.

Thanks for sharing the news about. That's fantastic that he is there and that the ARP is now another zoo in Australia with both Lumholtz's and Goodfellow's tree-'roos. Both stunning species in their own unique ways and the contrast between them is a specifal occurance to have a chance to experience seeing both species on the same day near one another.

Given their solitary natures, will be interesting to see if the park will receive a female Lumholtz' to maybe breed with Jasper in the near future? wonder where he came from (assume somehwhere in Queensland, albeit with Billabong/Coffs and Oakvale nearby having individuals too is an possibility, even if less likely).
