Pairi Daiza Pairi Daiza News 2024

I visited Pairi Daiza Park at the beginning of June. It is huge and breathtakingly wonderful. Plus, it's a bear's paradise. We were satisfied with the park and the condition of all the animals.

There are 3 polar bears. Beliy and Seriy are twin brothers and a female Qilak. The brothers lived together for a long time, but now they are separated because the zoo received the breeding permit. Beliy and Qilak are the breeding pair. They are together. I saw them in the ice cave. They were so sweet together. I haven't seen Seriy now. He must have been sleeping somewhere.
It was also nice to see the giant pandas. Tian Bao celebrated his 8th birthday. Now it was a bittersweet goodbye because she will be moving to China in the fall with her siblings Bao Di and Bao Mei. Their parents Hao Hao and Xing Hui seem to be staying.
The Asian black bear twins Paco and Phuket were sleeping.
It was also nice to see American black bears and European brown bears again. There are a lot of them, I have never seen anywhere else that so many individuals are kept together. The two groups are apparently calm, although their space is large. The disadvantage of this, however, is that since they are far away, it is difficult for me to identify them.

Pairi Daiza also boasts many apes. They have two groups of Western lowland gorillas and two groups of Sumatran orangutans. The orangutans, two breeding groups. One is Ujian and Sari, who came here from Heidelberg. They live with their two male offsprings, Berani and Mathai. The other group belongs to Gempa (He also celebrated his 19th birthday on the previous week). He lived with Sinta at first. They had two offsprings, but unfortunately they both died. They were later joined by Jula and Molli from the Budapest Zoo. Jula was overwhelmed by the other female in Budapest, but here in Pairi Daiza, the life of the team is balanced. Gorillas have a breeding group where the females are likely to be on birth control. This team is Nasibu, and the females already known from Germany are Uzuri and Gasira. The male group is divided into two. Shomari has been living alone since she was sick and lost a lot of weight. Now he is fine and has regained his weight and muscles, but he still lives separately and alone. Tebogo and Indigo share a volcano (here the gorilla houses are volcano-shaped) and outdoor enclosure. They are changed every few hours by the keepers in the enclosures. At the moment, this group could only be viewed indoors, because they had built new climbing frames for them outside, which looked like the apes' homes in the new Planet of the Apes movie.

And the elephants... Pairi Daiza also has a huge herd of elephants. Unfortunately, we did not see the female African elephants anymore, as they moved to England at the end of May to the West Midlands Safari Park. They had been in quarantine since Easter.
The park has a large breeding group of Asian elephants. Po Chin is their breeding bull. Unfortunately, we didn't see him from the train, but we did see the other two bulls, Chamundi and Ta Wan, who were playing with each other. Chamundi and Ta Wan are scheduled to move to Augsburg Zoo this month. We also heard from a local visitor we spoke to that there is a rumor that the two elderly elephants living together, Jana and Praya, will also be moving.
There is another elderly female, Mala, who lives alone.
The breeding herd alternately uses the two larger enclosures. Its members are Aye Chan May and her daughter Malee, Farina and her daughters Amithi, Nang Faa and Luna, Khaing Hnin Hnin and her daughter (Farina), Soraya and Malay. Ta Wan, Malee, Luna, and Sayun (who died last year) are offsprings of Po Chin.
There is also a special small group of elephants for Pairi Daiza. The Borneo pygmy elephant Sayang and the two sub-hybrid daughters Saphira and Sitara came from Hannover. During the summer, it provides a unique sight when the caretakers take them down to bathe in the lake. In this zoo, the caretakers work in direct contact with the elephants.

Asian Elephant herd updates as mentioned previously in the thread “Asian Elephants in Europe” by @MennoPebesma:
- The 6-year-old bull Ta Wan will move to Augsburg Zoo on July 18.

- 49-year-old cow Jana and 48-year-old cow Praya will soon move to new zoo in Casablanca, Morocco.

- 13-year-old cow Soraya is pregnant. The calf is expected in the second half of 2025.

The latest annual revenue figures for Pairi Daiza have been published recently. With an annual revenue of 117 million euros and a net profit of 9.5 million euros the zoo had a pretty good year financially. Of the profits 6.4 million euros was paid in dividends to the 2 owners of the zoo. Which means that Pairi Daiza has paid Eric Domb & Marc Coucke some 30 million euros in dividend since the new ownership construction in 2016.

To put these revenue numbers in perspective, only Zooparc de Beauval, with an annual revenue of 105 million euros in 2022 comes close. Other leading European zoos have a far smaller financial base: Zoo Berlin has a 2023 revenue of 38 million euros and zoos like Artis, Zurich and Vienna sit around 30 million euros.

The 2023 financial report can be found here:

All of it seems like Pairi Daiza has gone 100% for profit/commercial mode, which is not forbidden or necessarily good/bad. But it is visible in the zoo itself with more and more focus on making money by selling a unique hospitality experience.

Hiya! I’m headed to Pairi Daiza in the coming week, looking forward to it big time. I just wanted to ask a few questions to try plan out the day(s) a bit.

• Would you say it’d take two days to do the zoo properly? I have the time to do so, but just wondering if it’d be needed.
• And any specific species I should look out for, outside of some of the must sees? (Cuscus, Shoebill, Spix’s Macaws etc..) Anything I should keep an eye out for in general?

If this is your first time visiting Pairi Daiza, depending on how much time you need for walking and how long you spend at exhibits, I would say two full days at the zoo is highly advisable. Having two fulls days could also come in handy to have some time to visit some areas twice if you particularly like them or if some animals didn't show up (well) on the first visit.

I think two more must sees would be the walruses and musk ox in The Land of the Cold, the musk ox now also have a calf.

In The Middle Kingdom (Chinese area) especially you should pay attention to not just do the larger walkways but also to take the smaller walkways, in order not to miss some exhibits.

I visited 1.8.24 (photos on media gallery) but one thing didn't make sense to me. I was so excited to see a tasmanian devil for the 1st time, I got to the habitat and saw kangaroos

WHYYY:mad:

There are actually Tasmanian devils at Pairi Daiza (two new ones came from Kopenhagen last year) but they aren't always outdoors and visible unfortunately. The kangaroos have always been able to access to devil exhibit, strangely.

I was browsing on the Pairi Daiza homepage and i stumbled upon the north-american porcupine who apparently lives in the last frontier. I quite often visit the park and I even did in early july but I saw no sign of them. The only logical place I can think of is a shared habitat with the beavers. Can someone tell me where the porcupines are?

They live in an exhibit next to the lobby of The Paddling Bear Hotel in The Last Frontier, on the opposite side of that building from the Steller's sea lions. They are only visible for resort guests though.

I allways pretend I am a resort guest to go to watch them. Nobody ever has asked me anything.

the new sanctuary project looks promising. There are, apart from the species we already know, also going to be otters in here. likely giant otters since they live in the amazon. The temperature is also going to be 24 degrees in the greenhouse and there is going to be a total water volume of 14.757.750 liter!!

this is just the underwater part and it is mind blowing to realise this is only a very small part of the project. I got the photo's from the designer of the tech in the aquariums PAIRI DAIZA SANCTUARY

I am surprised that of all aquarium designers PD would choose a company whose repertoire mainly consists of shopping mall menageries and aquariums (including the odious Aslan Park). I hope this isn’t done to cut corners.
