I visited Pairi Daiza Park at the beginning of June. It is huge and breathtakingly wonderful. Plus, it's a bear's paradise. We were satisfied with the park and the condition of all the animals.
There are 3 polar bears. Beliy and Seriy are twin brothers and a female Qilak. The brothers lived together for a long time, but now they are separated because the zoo received the breeding permit. Beliy and Qilak are the breeding pair. They are together. I saw them in the ice cave. They were so sweet together. I haven't seen Seriy now. He must have been sleeping somewhere.
It was also nice to see the giant pandas. Tian Bao celebrated his 8th birthday. Now it was a bittersweet goodbye because she will be moving to China in the fall with her siblings Bao Di and Bao Mei. Their parents Hao Hao and Xing Hui seem to be staying.
The Asian black bear twins Paco and Phuket were sleeping.
It was also nice to see American black bears and European brown bears again. There are a lot of them, I have never seen anywhere else that so many individuals are kept together. The two groups are apparently calm, although their space is large. The disadvantage of this, however, is that since they are far away, it is difficult for me to identify them.
Pairi Daiza also boasts many apes. They have two groups of Western lowland gorillas and two groups of Sumatran orangutans. The orangutans, two breeding groups. One is Ujian and Sari, who came here from Heidelberg. They live with their two male offsprings, Berani and Mathai. The other group belongs to Gempa (He also celebrated his 19th birthday on the previous week). He lived with Sinta at first. They had two offsprings, but unfortunately they both died. They were later joined by Jula and Molli from the Budapest Zoo. Jula was overwhelmed by the other female in Budapest, but here in Pairi Daiza, the life of the team is balanced. Gorillas have a breeding group where the females are likely to be on birth control. This team is Nasibu, and the females already known from Germany are Uzuri and Gasira. The male group is divided into two. Shomari has been living alone since she was sick and lost a lot of weight. Now he is fine and has regained his weight and muscles, but he still lives separately and alone. Tebogo and Indigo share a volcano (here the gorilla houses are volcano-shaped) and outdoor enclosure. They are changed every few hours by the keepers in the enclosures. At the moment, this group could only be viewed indoors, because they had built new climbing frames for them outside, which looked like the apes' homes in the new Planet of the Apes movie.
And the elephants... Pairi Daiza also has a huge herd of elephants. Unfortunately, we did not see the female African elephants anymore, as they moved to England at the end of May to the West Midlands Safari Park. They had been in quarantine since Easter.
The park has a large breeding group of Asian elephants. Po Chin is their breeding bull. Unfortunately, we didn't see him from the train, but we did see the other two bulls, Chamundi and Ta Wan, who were playing with each other. Chamundi and Ta Wan are scheduled to move to Augsburg Zoo this month. We also heard from a local visitor we spoke to that there is a rumor that the two elderly elephants living together, Jana and Praya, will also be moving.
There is another elderly female, Mala, who lives alone.
The breeding herd alternately uses the two larger enclosures. Its members are Aye Chan May and her daughter Malee, Farina and her daughters Amithi, Nang Faa and Luna, Khaing Hnin Hnin and her daughter (Farina), Soraya and Malay. Ta Wan, Malee, Luna, and Sayun (who died last year) are offsprings of Po Chin.
There is also a special small group of elephants for Pairi Daiza. The Borneo pygmy elephant Sayang and the two sub-hybrid daughters Saphira and Sitara came from Hannover. During the summer, it provides a unique sight when the caretakers take them down to bathe in the lake. In this zoo, the caretakers work in direct contact with the elephants.
