One of the pairs of Common Rueppell's griffon vultures (Gyps rueppelli rueppelli) laid an egg last week, like the previous eggs, this egg will eventually be send to Diergaarde Blijdorp to be incubated there. In the mean time the vultures will get a fake egg, once the egg has hatched in Blijdorp, the chick will be returned to the parents.

Last year, Avifauna exchanged their breeding pair of Steller's sea eagles (Haliaeetus pelagicus) with a new pair. The old pair, after raising more than 20 young, are enjoying their well-earned retirement elsewhere.

The new pair came from a seizure and they have a nest for the first time now. They have laid two eggs there. The nest is located high up in a tree, but can be followed via a livestream.

Sadly neither of the Steller's sea eagle chicks made it. One died within days and the other was killed by the parents, possibly due to inexperience.

In better news, two Rüppell's griffon vulture chicks are being raised at Avifauna, and a pair of Rüppell's vultures is fostering a white-backed vulture chick that hatched from an egg laid at Zie-Zoo.

A wild pair of Western cattle egrets has a nest near the Cuba aviary at Avifauna and has raised at least one chick. The western cattle egret is a pretty new nesting species for the Netherlands with only a handful of breeding pairs so far.

Very interesting how captive colonies in zoos seem to attract wild birds to nest nearby. With the Black-crowned night heron regularly nesting above Aquazoo Leeuwarden's aviary that also has that species, and now Cattle egret near Avifauna's captive colony. I wonder what other wild Benelux birds display this behaviour...

There's a colony of wild black-crowned night herons at Artis.
