Toronto Zoo Former Toronto Zoo Animals

Have we heard at all if the two Giant Panda babies born at TZ have had babies themselves now that they're back in China? And/or for that matter has there been any news about any of the 4 of them other than Er Shun having twin boys in the past few years (can't remember which year the post said off the top of my head)?

Makes me so sad to read that...for whatever reason I like them better than the Whites!
I love them both, and I don't understand why they're getting rid of the Indian rhinos. All throughout my childhood, they were the animal my family's zoo visits began with, and in adulthood on my past decade of solo trips they've been what I end the journey with a visit to... :c

I mean, they're also getting rid of hippos, an iconic and popular zoo staple nearly every zoo you can think of has, so who knows what the logic behind some of these phase-outs are.

River hippos are getting phased out as the cost of a new exhibit is fairly prohibitive, as they would need a large indoor enclosure where they would be viewable year round. The current hippo house is already a bit of a mess with a number of issues.

There is talk about a combined space that the pygmy hippos, red river hogs, and warthogs, would rotate through, using the current outdoor river hippo space as part of this. I think this could be quite exciting to see, but we will see.

Wait there making a huge space where only one of the three species would be visible at a time?

No they would be rotation exhibits I believe. This was in the Animal Lives with Purpose plan from 2020.
"When river hippos are phased out, utilize the exhibit space for rotating warthogs, pygmy hippos and red river hogs. The existing hippo house would need to be replaced or the roof repaired before we house other animals there."

There is nothing about this in the Master Plan.

So honestly, I would say up in the air what will happen, but I do think a river hippo phase out is very likely just based on the cost to build a new facility for them.

Shaboola the 45 year old female white rhino has sadly passed away at Zoo Granby. She was born to father, Bull. She was the oldest rhino in Canada and the third oldest in North America.

Shaboola was pretty cool. She was the first white rhino calf for the zoo and Canada when she was born to Bull and Pistol. She was the big sister to brothers Yeki, Abeeko, and Atu/Crusher. She lived at the zoo the majority of her life. Sadly she never had any calves of her own but she was one of the rhinos that inspired generations of Toronto kids to love rhinos. She might have been gone for quite some time now but I bet most of us met her as kids. Interestingly of the 6 white rhino calves born in Toronto, to date, she is the only female.

Shaboola's father was actually "Bender", who arrived from San Diego as a two-year-old in 1974 and left Toronto for the Calgary Zoo in 1988 and died at Safari West Santa Rosa in May 2007. I'm a little surprised they never attempted breeding her in her nearly three decades living with Bull, who was actually completely unrelated to her and was a breeding male, might have been an issue on Shaboola's end then.

Mylo, the snow leopard fathered 1 cub at John Ball Zoo in Summer. He was one of the cub of Ena and Kota at the Toronto zoo. There is now a naming contest for the baby snow leopard at John Ball Zoo.
Don’t ‘fur-get’ to vote on John Ball Zoo snow leopard cub’s name
The snow leopard named Mera has sadly passed away at the age of 9 month because of abnormalities of her urinary system. Mara was born to Mylo and Yuki. This news is so devastating since it is the first offspring of Mylo and Yuki.

Asha, the western lowland gorilla at the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo is pregnant. She is due to give birth mid-May and end of July. The sire is Goma. Asha is the daughter of Barney, who lived at the Toronto Zoo before.
8.5K views · 497 reactions | Mother’s Day is extra special in Primate World this year! Asha, a 32-year-old critically endangered Western lowland gorilla, is pregnant. She is due between mid-May and the end of July. This will be Asha's third offspring and dad, Goma's, first little one. Asha is super smart, and she approaches a training panel and presents her stomach so we can touch it with the ultrasound wand. She’ll stand and get training rewards for participating, and her methods of presenting her stomach to us are adorable. During ultrasounds, Asha stands next to the mesh training panel and leans her stomach sideways against the mesh, with her arms outstretched above her. Keepers, from the other side of the protective barrier, slip an ultrasound wand through the mesh and press it against her abdomen. Animal keepers say the ultrasound gel is often off-putting for animals – even if they warm it up. Animals typically don’t like the texture, but Asha doesn’t mind. She participates in the ultrasound sessions for around 30 minutes, and is free to leave the sessions any time she pleases. She offers her belly to keepers in a more ‘theatrical’ way, too. “She has an especially graceful stomach presentation, where she lifts one leg straight up against the mesh, like a ballerina, so we can position the wand on the underside of her round tummy,” Jon Wild, lead Primate World keeper, says. “Guests get a real kick out of seeing that, and it gives us great wand placement options to see the baby moving around.” Read the full announcement, and why this is so special for the troop, here: https://conta.cc/4m9VwVO | Cheyenne Mountain Zoo
