North Carolina Zoo North Carolina Zoo News 2024

A couple things to note from my last visit
- The Sandhills display in Cypress Swamp has been partially replenished. I was able to see both the Eastern Indigo Snake as well as the Carolina Gopher Frog
- Asia construction is still coming along beautifully
- I talked to a volunteer about the 0.2 Ostriches bts and they said that introductions are happening with the zebras in the morning and it won't be long before all 3 species are out on exhibit together

Some more things from my trip on Saturday.
- the first exhibit in Deserts was boarded up.
- The giant salamander is on zoo ground and being housed bts in the Streamside building.

Maybe as a rotational species with the gibbons? Either way, my money's on silver-leaf or Francois' langurs - Knoxville has a similar setup with silver-leaf langurs and lar gibbons.
I could've sworn they are sharing with the otters? Maybe that was the gibbons.

From everything we have heard, only the gibbons are with the otters.

Did anything end up replacing where the red panda exhibit was going to be? Considering that's another arboreal mammal, that seems like it may be an appropriate location for langurs.

Just got back from yet another trip to the zoo (had a day off) and there were quite a few areas and exhibits that were closed off. Asia is coming along nicely as usual, but I didn't notice anything new that was worth mentioning.

Some observations.

North America
  • The "Wetland Homes" pavilion, along with the stretch of path it's on (between the Cougar exhibit and along the 2nd alligator exhibit to the bridge) was closed off due to construction. Work was being done on the roofs of the pavilion itself and the adjacent holding building. Oddly enough, the animals were still on exhibit.
  • The last Prairie viewing point (near Prairie Outpost and the Grizzly Bear exhibit) and the stretch of path it's on was blocked off, so visitors must pass through Prairie Outpost. No visible work was taking place, so I am not sure why it was closed off.
  • The Red Wolf exhibit was closed due to construction. The glass viewing barrier was completely removed, and netting about as tall as the surrounding rock work was installed. Not sure if this is just temporary or will be a permanent fixture once the barrier is replaced.
  • The Desert;
    • @toxodon first noted this, but the first exhibit on the right in the Desert (for Gila Monster/Beaded Lizard) had one of its windows boarded up, but it looks like the glass itself was actually replaced with the wood. However, only the glass panel was replaced; you could still see into the exhibit through the netting on the right, and in fact a Beaded Lizard was out on exhibit, despite signage stating the exhibit is closed.
    • The Madrean Alligator Lizard has been taken off-exhibit and replaced with Blue Death Feigning Beetles, which have been moved from their previous exhibit (the small terrarium in the rocks between the Desert Tortoise burrow and the Komodo Dragon exhibit). The former beetle exhibit is now empty and unsigned.
    • The Desert Blonde Tarantula terrarium was closed.
    • Also, does anyone know if the zoo actually has Baja Blue Rock Lizards? Or Desert Box Turtles and Desert Iguanas for that matter? For the past 4 visits, I have only seen the Chuckwalla and Tortoise.
  • Streamside signage could use some updating. It bugs me immensely that they still sign their Rat Snakes as Elaphe spp.
  • At the Asia complex, the main trail has been routed onto the new pavement installed in front of the entrance portal.
Africa
  • The section of trail just south of the Giraffe Feeding deck remains closed. This has been the case all year from what I could tell. No idea what is happening here. Visitors must detour through the Watani Grasslands complex.
  • Finally got to see the new classroom at the Chimpanzee exhibit; it's really nice and charming.
  • Also, Kendall might be one of my favorite individual zoo animals because I love the way he just sits at the windows and just watches everyone very intently.
  • Portable barriers were installed in front of both of the Gorilla viewing windows.

North Carolina Zoo and Botanical Gardens is a new name that can be used. Here's the press release (via Facebook):

We are one of only a handful of zoos nationwide to earn this distinction! Botanic Gardens Conservation International (BGCI), a membership organization representing botanic gardens in more than 100 countries, grants the zoo accreditation. According to BGCI, the North Carolina Zoo “conforms to the highest international standards” in plant conservation and care.

This accomplishment would not be possible without the incredible dedication and expertise of the Zoo’s Horticulture team! We already knew they are the BEST OF THE BEST, but now, it’s official!
