Tennōji Zoo Osaka Zoo News

If there is no hope in Japan for the species due to the draconian exotic wildlife (cum primate) imports, at least let the guy out into a zoo environment and facility where he can be with conspecifics of his own species!
There isn’t any drills left in the country and he is too old to be transported anywhere let alone to a zoo abroad that has drills.

Congratulations to Tennoji Zoo's 110th anniversary! Hope this means more upgrades both in habitat terms and species terms. Since this is the 110th anniversary of the zoo, admission is free on this day. Also, there have been hints of kiwi in merchandising and announcements, so it's basically confirmed that the zoo sees kiwi as a symbol of the zoo, and it might hint at a possible return of them soon.

Four of the zoo’s six chimpanzees (Ricky, Minami, Lemon, and Puteri) have returned to the old chimpanzee enclosure which is now named Chimpanzee Base. Rex and Nanako still remain in the temporary chimp enclosure. Chimpanzee Base is currently not open for public viewing.

Are all of their chimpanzees also of West African origins Pan troglodytes verus like the majority of Japanese chimpanzee bloodlines?

Nice to know the chimpanzee got more modern digs...! Appreciate if one of our Japan Zoo regulars make a review of the new exhibit and surrounding area.

According to GAIN, the troop is a mixed group of verus, hybrids, one nominate subspecies (the recently arrived Marilyn), and several “SO”s that I don’t understand because the website doesn’t explain the subspecies abbreviations.

Thanks for your comments. I do hope JAZA and EAZA can work together more closely as female Marilyn would be of interest to the small troglodytes ex situ conservation breeding program. Europe has a few elderly schweinfurthii and also 1-2+ Nigerians...

You are looking at all the great ape species. SO are siamang ..., I found out. LO seems to denotify lar gibbon.

Ah thank you. I forgot that Tennoji had siamangs when I was looking for Tennoji’s present stock list.

I have said this many times already but…

I know that exceptions were brought up, but unless any if these countries suddenly get EAZA members than no EAZA animals will be arriving to Japan anytime soon. I argue a better way is to collect gametes and tissues for a frozen zoo in Japan that could later be brought to the Europe for breeding.
