Don the drill is reported to have nosebleeds and wounds, usually signs of old age in drills. His days are certainly numbered.
Sorry to hear that. I plan to visit the zoo at the end of December and hope to see him againDon the drill is reported to have nosebleeds and wounds, usually signs of old age in drills. His days are certainly numbered.
Is he the last drill at the Zoo?Don the drill is reported to have nosebleeds and wounds, usually signs of old age in drills. His days are certainly numbered.
The last drill in the entire nation of Japan. Due to primate import laws and none of the countries allowed to export have mandrills. Is he the last drill at the Zoo?
*drillsmandrills
That is too bad. I do hope they may change the rules and regulations over primate imports/exports. It is certainly unhelpful ...!!!The last drill in the entire nation of Japan. Due to primate import laws and none of the countries allowed to export have mandrills.
If there is no hope in Japan for the species due to the draconian exotic wildlife (cum primate) imports, at least let the guy out into a zoo environment and facility where he can be with conspecifics of his own species!ドリルのドンの処置について | 地方独立行政法人天王寺動物園
Don the drill is currently doing well, as the condition of his teeth has been restored to normal. He seems to be doing well for the time being.
There isn’t any drills left in the country and he is too old to be transported anywhere let alone to a zoo abroad that has drills. If there is no hope in Japan for the species due to the draconian exotic wildlife (cum primate) imports, at least let the guy out into a zoo environment and facility where he can be with conspecifics of his own species!
How old is the male drill then? There isn’t any drills left in the country and he is too old to be transported anywhere let alone to a zoo abroad that has drills.
Don was born in April, 9, 1996 making him 28 years old.How old is the male drill then?
Last query: Is his bloodline represented at all in the captive population? Could his genetic material be preserved (for AI if that was an option aka in the Frozen Zoo setting)?Don was born in April, 9, 1996 making him 28 years old.
Are all of their chimpanzees also of West African origins Pan troglodytes verus like the majority of Japanese chimpanzee bloodlines?Four of the zoo’s six chimpanzees (Ricky, Minami, Lemon, and Puteri) have returned to the old chimpanzee enclosure which is now named Chimpanzee Base. Rex and Nanako still remain in the temporary chimp enclosure. Chimpanzee Base is currently not open for public viewing.

According to GAIN, the troop is a mixed group of verus, hybrids, one nominate subspecies (the recently arrived Marilyn), and several “SO”s that I don’t understand because the website doesn’t explain the subspecies abbreviations. Are all of their chimpanzees also of West African origins Pan troglodytes verus like the majority of Japanese chimpanzee bloodlines?
Nice to know the chimpanzee got more modern digs...! Appreciate if one of our Japan Zoo regulars make a review of the new exhibit and surrounding area.
Thanks for your comments. I do hope JAZA and EAZA can work together more closely as female Marilyn would be of interest to the small troglodytes ex situ conservation breeding program. Europe has a few elderly schweinfurthii and also 1-2+ Nigerians...According to GAIN, the troop is a mixed group of verus, hybrids, one nominate subspecies (the recently arrived Marilyn), and several “SO”s that I don’t understand because the website doesn’t explain the subspecies abbreviations.
