Paignton Zoo Paignton Zoo news 2024

On the Halloween post they mention peccary’s.

Am I going senile or do I not remember seeing them?
Paignton Zoo is home to an all-female group of peccaries. As @Rajang21 mentioned, the peccaries live behind Monkey Heights alongside the wallabies. They have a nice enclosure and when I visited, there were remnants of enrichment scattered around the paddock.

Another positive development. I really look forward to planned opening of the Crocodile Swamp in due course as well! Have they turned the corner now ....? I think the general zoo visiting public do appreciate these changes.

For once they seem to have solicited the public for their views, taken notice of two of the visitors' main complaints- croc swamp and indoor giraffe house closures, and then acted on them. A very positive development after so many other issues.

I’m super happy about this. The acting CEO Stephen Kings is leading his team brilliantly and I’m so glad the previous regime were not allowed to continue damaging our zoo. Closing the Giraffe house was so short sighted, given the geography of the zoo and the context of the animals that once lived there. To not fix the walkways short-medium term was criminal!
Looking more positively into the future, eventually the herd will have full access to the ‘elephant’ side and Takin will return to the quarry making that corner of the zoo a destination once again. The former camel enclosure will become a zoo allotment.

Considering there are 2 other fundraising campaigns(with huge targets) down south at the same time this is a fantastic achievement so hopefully it will soon hit the target.

Intriguing…what are the other two projects they’re up against?

Wildheart(Isle of Wight) are trying to raise £225,000 to rehome a pair of bears from Azerbaijan & Big Cat Sanctuary are trying to raise £500,000 to rehome 5 lions. Albeit so far BCS are very close to their target & Wildheart have raised over £150,000.

Now obviously anyone that is connected to Paignton(via jobs, family member working there, locals etc) will choose them, however that does mean there are 3 big fundraising campaigns ongoing. Hopefully Paignton will hit their tagert soon and all will be good

It’s just a crying shame that he hasn’t lead his team like this through the whole of the past few disastrous years. You need to remember that he is a part of the previous regime who have damaged the zoo so much.

These three projects are not really in competition. I could see how the Wildheart and BCS may be slightly, as geographically nearer to each other and the same size of Project.

PZ, being in the SW, is not on the radar of people supporting the others as it’s definitely more of a local cause than the others, especially with such a low target that should have been reached quicker if supported greatly.

PZ really has lost the support of other zoos / is not regarded highly any more in zoo circles and is, unfortunately, much more of a local attraction now having to rely on local supporters, many of which have lost heart with the zoo and its direction over the past years. It’s going to take a lot to get that previous affection back.

It's not about the location I live up north but I follow the progress of all 3. If someone else is aware of the projects and take a liking to the story then they will contribute. What I'm saying is that Paignton has the lowest target of the 3 but still hasn't reached it yet.

Getting back to Paignton I do hope they raise the funds and reopen the swamp. I don't know what the future holds for them but I hope they continue to listen to & address visitors concerns

RESCUE/FUND-RAISING ANIMAL RELOCATION
The money raised by these institutions would be far better spent on in situ wildlife and nature conservation than in rescue of individueel animals long distance! Remember that this 875,000GBP would make a huge difference in situ compared to what it does in the UK.

These initiatives do nothing to resolve local conditions for wildlife, zoo animals nor public awareness and concern among the general public that there are more cost effective methods, tools and facilities to accomplish this. Finally, I remain strongly convinced zoos should focus primarily on ex situ conservation, public awareness and managing sustainably zoo populations of both exhibit and threatened animal species.

To me, those GBP's would best serve establishing long term sustainable bear conservation and rehabilitation programmes in situ. This both designed to re-establish Syrian / Caucasus bears to their natural range as well as support zoos and other ex situ (rehabilitation) facilities in-country to provide a refuge for dancing bears or those kept inadequately in peoples' homes.

For the zoo part and animals from sub-par facilities the focus should be on the existing EAZA working group to assist, support and improve sub-standard zoos in central, southern and eastern Europe and Eurasia and assist in the creation of more and modern purposed zoo facilities with adequate financial support and funding to do so.

PAIGNTON ZOO ON-TOPIC:
If this were so Paignton Zoo - which is probably the largest ex situ conservation oriented zoo facility locally with an pre-existing conservation body for in situ - would have a much fairer ground to seek the investment and funding it requires to improve and build upon the present-day zoo.

I agree with @TriUK ... that the new CEO (and his current team) are doing exactly what the last - underperforming - team and those before "them" to make any past Masterplan more of a reality. I am glad the CEO recognises that popular exhibits like giraffe or crocodile will go along way to regain visitor numbers, populatiry and ascendency for the zoo to make PZ even better than it once was!!!!!!

What a crying shame (as K-B says above), that all that money is not being put to a better use.
UK zoos involved in legally and ethically required breeding and conservation programmes have to fund such developments themselves (out of taxed earnings or borrowings) because the press will only cover, and thus the public will only donate serious amounts, to these sob-sob stories.

I think that perhaps ‘he’ and ‘his’ team were misled by the previous CEO? Regardless of past wrongs, from anyone, the zoo is stabilising and finally moving forward again, bit by bit. When the new Takin arrive, new lion house is built and viewing platform reinstated, croc swamp opens and new baboon enclosure resolved, Paignton will start to really thrive and attract back many, many past members and locals who lost faith - I’m confident of that!

Fully agree with above. Started with YWP and it’s become quite a trend now to rehome these charismatic large carnivores from Eastern Europe. Think places have cottoned on to the fact that they can make a quick buck on public funds and gain a good healthy dose of promotion from these vanity projects, when much more could be done with less charismatic and more vulnerable species. But of course the same scale of public support would sadly likely not be able to be achieved with less charismatic animals.

Paignton already have lions. I think the reference to a 'lion house' means new indoor housing for the existing lions in their current enclosure. Not any new ones.

I think they were replying to this post:
