Indian rhino in Europe

In the Beauval thread someone mentions male Sahib died in Beauval.
Correct, he died quite unexpectedly.

I was in Arcachon last week and saw two rhinos. The female is Zhiwa but I can't find out if the other is Kiran or Jari. They both have lived in Arcachon.
For a time Zoo de la Teste / Arcachon held 3.0 bachelor herd, including the Polish born male Bys now at Zoo de la Fleche. I cannot help you on both males Jari (b. 2012) nor Kiran (b. 2013). I do expect one of these bulls to leave / have left (????) to make way for a potential breeding pair in Arcachon.

Several other zoos could do with a new male ASAP:
i. Eindhoven (F Kiran (aged 5+, recently arrived and with old cow Narayani to move to a non-breeding facility (destination????).

ii. Lisboa (M Gangtok is not going anywhere with the cows and breeding success with their pairings has been neglible and only produced stillbirths over the years .... The pairing Gangtok * Teja is definitely a failure and I suspect that both Teja and Nova are now post reproductive ... Unsure about the younger cow Savita (b. 2014 in Stuttgart, arrived 2016. The whole set up is IMO a complete disaster ....)

iii. Rotterdam (F Karuna is on her own ..., plans to move her to South America fallen through and ... not quite sure what will happen next. A pairing with a new unrelated bull would be in the best interest of all concerned ...)
iv. Wien (the Nepali wild born pair needs to be broken up, it is wasting vital genes like this as both bull and cow came in direct from Chitwan NP in Nepal all these years ago)

v. Wroclaw (F Maruska is awaiting a new mate)

On Zhiwa's arrival, it was said that she would form a pair with the male Jari. I have no idea if Bys and Kiran are still in Arcachon, but I still have them there in my list. Because I have no knowledge of them being somewhere else.

The Bys in La Flèche is another Bys. Bys I is/was in Arcachon and Bys II lives in La Flèche.

Edinburgh's male is on the move this month, so maybe.....

She was born in the wild so it's a real pitty she only had one son who hasn't offspring of his own.
True this may be ..., it is really down to the VERY fact she was for far too long kept with a male with which she was not breeding. Her window of opportunity had long since passed when she first had a stillbirth in 2004 (Rapti had an estimated birth date of 1990 in Nepal) and aborted an malformed calf in 2012. I think the subsequent surviving male calf in 2015 (# Puri) was in part due to a carefully monitored pregnancy. This male was transferred to Basel Zoo in 2022 and is now 9 years of age and about to become the new breeding male.

(2.0) Bys I and Kiran have been at Animália Park (Cotia, state of São Paulo, Brazil) since 2022. I saw both rhinos when I went there earlier this year.

Indian rhinoceros female Karuna will soon move from Diergaarde Blijdorp to a zoo in Lima, Peru. Following her move, 37-year-old female Narayani will move to Blijdorp from Eindhoven Zoo.

Another Dutch zoo is also planning a move of an Indian rhino. At DierenPark Amersfoort, visitors saw a transport box near the rhino enclosure. Keepers have confirmed that male Thanos will move this year.

As told by Marco Antônio Majolo (the director of Animália Park), they are going to wait until the four rhinos (Bys, Kiran, Karuna and Valentina) reach sexual maturity and then exchange a male in Cotia for a female in Lima.

Quite a few Zoochatters must have missed this news from some time back. Do You have more information from the time in 2022 both males Bys and Kiran arrived at Animalia Park or at the time they were both imported. I can imagine the local press or the Animalia Zoo Communication Department may have posted or publicised about it?!!!!

Not really. Animália is as transparent as North Korea and the rhinos arrived before the grand opening, so I have no info on them atm.

Indian rhinoceros male Jakob/Kuba has died at the Warsaw Zoo. He had been suffering from an inflammatory process in his horn for years. Last year, he became very unwell and tests showed that he had a high titer of antibodies to West Nile virus. He was rescued, but has not fully recovered since.

In recent weeks, the ongoing horn infection got worse. The wound began to expand and unfortunately surrounding tissues, including bones, became involved. Jakob began to show signs of pain and discomfort despite intensive treatment. His well-being deteriorated and the chances of recovery dwindled to zero. It was therefore decided to put him to sleep.

The move has been postponed for now.

It will create a definite true headache for the EEP species coordination(s). Zoo Eindhoven situation: Elderly cow Narayani not just needs to move ..., she cannot stay much longer at her current zoo facility. The new young cow destined for a pairing with a suitable male for breeding is already on site and her suitor is also arriving soonish.

The reason for postponing the move is just nigh ******* (words do fail me).

NOTA BENE\MIND YOU: For all intense purposes I am definitely not talking about the very competent rhino team at Blijdorp - Rotterdam Zoo, just I mean much higher up the chain.....
