Berlin Tierpark Tierpark Berlin News 2024

I also found one of the Sulawesi Crested Macaque:

And here we have some recent births which I actually didn't mention so far as they occur quite frequently at the Tierpark. But some but a few of them may actually still be interesting as apparently they aren't so common in some regions and countries (I checked Zootierliste and was quite surprised):

Eastern Wallaroo:

East African Banded Mongoose:

North American Porcupine:

Chacoan Peccary:
I'm very glad you are bringing this information over here, I'll be visiting both the zoo and Tierpark next month and I'm just too excited so I appreciate your updates :D

Well, an update is overdue. And there is quite a number of relevant news:

1) A male gerenuk died, so there are 3,3 gerenuks in Berlin now (1,3 in Berlin Tierpark and 2,0 in Berlin Zoo). This really isn't fun. I still remember how thrilled I was, when this species first arrived and each time there has been a birth. This enthusiasm has siginificantly suffered since then, though.

2) But there is also good news from the Africa zone: After the birth of a giraffe bull on June 24th, a little giraffe cow was born this last Sunday (August 11th). And apparently, they are still expecting a third birth. I think this will be a nice scene to watch.

3) It seems like they are preparing to put up the new roof on the elephant building. A couple of years ago I had the chance to speak with a (then) leading engineer or at least construction planner at the construction site who explained me how crucial this part is for the whole building process.

4) Some bad news again: A deceased Mitchell's lorikeet has been diagnosed with West Nile virus. The other 4 specimen also died and are presently being examined. So another blow against the bird section of the park (and they already seem less and less willing to put up with the various struggles like various predators or bird flue.

5) More births:
- There finally has been a birth at the Somali Wild Asses after some 8 years.
- There also have been 2 births at the Eastern Kiangs (the group has just received 0,2 specimen from Munich so the last remaining German herd is expanding).
- The black or Sulawesi crested macaques also have an offspring. After the little Sulawesi Babirusa it already is the second bith on the new exhibit. Unfortunately, one of the Asian small clawed otters died (possibly in a fight with the macaques?) but it already got replaced.
- The Rocky Mountains Goats have a little male.
- Three Thomson's Gazelles and an Addra Gazelle are being raised by staff behind the scenes
I saw today 1.2 gerenuk in one enclosure and in next one 1.1, so in Tierpark there are five gerenuks 2 males and 3 females.

The Giraffe calves have received the names of BERTI and EMILY.
Tierpark Berlin on Instagram: "Unsere "kleinen" Giraffen bringen ordentlich Schwung in die Herde! Emily und Berti erkunden ihr Zuhause gern gemeinsam. Dabei fallen nicht nur ihre äußeren Unterschiede auf (Berti ist natürlich schon ein Stück größer), sondern auch ihr Charakter. Beide sind zwar sehr neugierig, aber Berti ist eindeutig ein kleiner Frechdachs. Our 'little' giraffes bring a lot of energy to the herd! Emily and Berti love exploring their home together. It's not just their external differences that stand out (Berti is naturally a bit bigger) but also their personalities. Both are very curious, though Berti is definitely a bit cheeky. #giraffe #rothschildgiraffe #nachwuchs #jungtier #zooberlin"

You could say the park is kind of going big/aiming high these days. As the main season starts to fade away, the

The three giraffe calves have already been mentioned. So all three breeding cows recommended by the EEP have been successful this year. And of course it's a great new highlight at the newly opened Savannah and its giraffe trail.

Very close to the growing giraffe herd, they finally started putting up the new roof construction of the designated elephant building! Actually, this comes as a big surprise for me. Not long ago, a friend of mine had heard from other visitors that they made some important progress but now still plan starting next year.
Well, only yesterday, another frequent and often really well-informed visitor posted some pictures which clearly indicate they are adding huge beams to start the roof construction and hopefully will have it well under way before winter. It's still delayed for half a year, as they actually wanted to start by spring 2024. But I'm just glad, this crucial part of the project finally started:

Only after the elephant building is finished, they are going to be able to connect the giraffe area with the main savannah, while some of the smaller animals may even enter the elephant area(s).
In contrast, I haven't heard any news of the designated rhino complex yet. Construction was scheduled to start by autumn/fall 2024 - which just started. Having said that, I could well imagine this also could face some delay. I'll stay tuned.

Last but not least, they decided to extend the dinosaur exhibition for a third year until autumn/fall 2025. It has indeed been quite popular with visitors and particular with families. This could well be a strategic decision, as the large new projects are still under way and likely there won't be any big new attractions in 2025 (other than potential new offspring of popular species that is).

So it begins... :)

Pictures from today. According to W. Dreier's sources (Schueling forum user), the whole roof structure will weigh about 35 tons.

I am more than thrilled. It feels like I've been waiting for this for ages. Actually, I almost would have been in the Tierpark today myself. But family took priority.

Wow, a major step forward! Have you any idea what would be realistic to expect the new Elephant Dome building to be finished? End of 2025 or mid 2026???

I'm not sure, if they can make 2025 but it would be awesome. It's the park's 70th anniversary. But I would still be glad, if they manage to open it by 2026...

Who are the mother of the 3 calves? Are they all purebred Nubian (Rothschildt's) giraffe Giraffa camelopardalis camelopardalis?

Yes, the hybrid cows havn't been breeding for quite a few years now. One of the cows is Amalka from Czech Republic. The other two are Katharina and Maude which came from Kronberg and are quite a bit older.

...and so it continues:

Apparently, the whole project picked up a whole new pace now. One by one, the massive beams arrive and find their places - a bit like assembling a lego set. After all this delay, this feels highly satisfying.

And some more good news:
A third Kiang has been born some days ago. This seems to turn out as a rather strong year, when it comes to births and building projects.

Hey all,
Apologies for derailing the thread bit, but I might be heading to Germany around April next year, and want to get to either the Berlin Tierpark or the Berlin Zoo. Does the Tierpark still have Okapi? Further, which one is likely to present the most lifers as someone visiting from Australia who is only familiar with species kept in Australian and New Zealander zoos?

These threads are as much about discussion as news, so no need to apologise. Obligatory "try to visit both" comment out of the way first...

Tierpark currently still holds the 2 young Okapi bulls, and there's been no talk about them leaving in the short term. I'd be surprised if they did, certainly before April next year, given the Zoo will soon be losing them for the general improvement of that area.

Regarding lifers, I would hazard a guess that Tierpark is the best option here. Both zoos hold species that are rare internationally, but from my limited knowledge of Australian zoos I would imagine the vast hoofstock collection of Tierpark combined with other rare animals such as the Javan leopard would make it the better choice. Zootierliste is probably your friend for double checking, as well as better travelled Zoochatters who will undoubtedly reply with more information.

Thank you! Visiting both would definitely be ideal, but I don't know if I'll have enough time unfortunately. Glad to hear the okapi are still there (they're a particular species I'd love to see), and thanks for your thoughts. I'll definitely have a quick scroll on Zootierliste before I make the final call.
