North America Western Lowland Gorilla Population

It's the end of an era in Toronto. Charles passed away yesterday afternoon from suspected cardiac disease. He was 52 and had been at the zoo since it's opening day. His legacy will live on in his offspring and grandchildren across the continent.

Very sad news, he lived quite the life.

From here, the plan was to acquire one of Granby's bachelor males as the new Silverback, but which male was/has yet to be decided.

It’ll be Jawara. He is Toronto owned, extremely genetically valuable, and unrelated to all of the animals at Toronto.

Louis and Kuchimba are both of abysmal genetic value, and Zwalani is related to Johari, who they are retaining. Jawara is therefore the only viable option to step up as the silver back for this genetically valuable breeding group.

I can't remember exactly who, but unless plans have changed in the meantime - he is to be joined by a few younger females from Zoo Atlanta. It was found in a publicly available SSP document awhile back that was shared here - I believe someone wrote up a synopsis of all it entailed but you'd have to dig back for it.
