SeaWorld Abu Dhabi news thread

SeaWorld Abu Dhabi Updates
The Atlantic Humpback and Indo-Pacific Bottlenose Dolphins are now both on display. The park received Oceanic Manta Ray which can be seen in the world's largest aquarium, Endless Ocean. Lastly SeaWorld Abu Dhabi will soon be receiving Sunfish and there are plans underdevelopment for an arctic fox enclosure to be built in the Arctic realm.
The following video released by the park shows evidence of the mantas: SeaWorld® Yas Island, Abu Dhabi on Instagram‎: "How many different types of rays can you name? Or better yet how many will you spot during your next visit to #EndlessOcean? #SeaWorldYasIsland #YasIsland #InAbuDhabi كم نوعًا تعرفون من أسماك الراي؟ والأهم، كم نوعًا تودون التعرف عليه في زيارتكم القادمة إلى #المحيط_اللانهائي؟! #سي_وورلد_جزيرة_ياس #جزيرة_ياس #في_أبوظبي"‎

2 African Manatee now added to the parks line up also. Transferred from COEX Aquarium, South Korea.

National Aquarium Abu Dhabi Welcomes Two African Manatees As Species Ambassadors

A very impressive species list is forming with some notable rarities;

- African Manatee
- Dugong
- Atlantic Humpback Dolphin
- Indo-Pacific Bottlenose Dolphin
- Manta Ray
- Sea Otter
- choice selection of penguin species
etc

Look out Toba!

Wonder if we will see more traffic heading to UAE in the coming months, some detailed reviews and images would be appreciated if anyone does make it there, looks like a few nice collections could be rounded up in a small area...

Everything but orcas really!
I'm sure if all didn't happen as it did they would have plans for them though

Agree. I also believe initial plans may well have have included orca.

For the benefit of anyone joining this thread now;

The initial and larger plans had involved the creation of an artificial island in the shape of an orca containing a Seaworld, Aquatica, Busch Gardens and Discovery cove at The Palm Jebel Ali, Dubai.

The African Manatee went to the National Aquarium of Abu Dhabi not SeaWorld Abu Dhabi. They are two different facilities but both aquariums located in the area. Regardless the park still has quite the collection!

My apologies you are quite right, i saw a snippet of news on social media that said "Seaworld" and a quick google has failed me.

An amazing density of massive aquariums!

While looking for species signs of the aquarium on YouTube, I stumbled upon this:

Apparently last October they added a tiger shark to the big ocean tank. 140 cm in length. I have no idea if it is still alive, they tend to be difficult in captivity. The giant manta ray settled in well, I saw videos of it only a few weeks ago.

Hello my friends,
does anybody know if the Indian Ocean humpback dolphin "Nayer" is on show ? Am I right saying that Indo-pacific bottlenosedolphin, Atlantic humpback dolphins, Giant oceanic manta ray and Dugong are on display ?
Thanks, Jakub

The Giant Oceanic Manta Ray is on-display in the main Endless Ocean Tank but last I heard the Tiger Shark is behind the scenes.
Good to know that the tiger is alright! It'll be cool to see another in aquaria. Their reputation for being poor aquarium sharks is a tad overblown, if cared for properly they can live over 20 and maybe even 30 years in captivity (as one did in Mexico in the 2000s, per Henry Mollet's old website). Georgia's is by all accounts doing quite well.

I know this thread been untouched for a little while and I feel safe to assume that this thread can also function as a news thread I’m wondering if anyone else heard about the facility acquiring manta rays. It seems to have sparked media outrage recently (oh The Dodo and PETA’s SeaWorld of Hurt going to have a field day :p:rolleyes:). I personally find it hypocritical if this going to get ppl to point all fingers at SW for being the facility taking these animals from the wild when every other accredited facility does this, plus people aren’t rioting over home aquariums which majority of species haven’t been captive bred. Sucks this is going to be another negative PR for SW when it’s every other facility doing this. For the record I have no problem w/aquariums housing elasmobranchs (heck some species tend to be more difficult to care for then cetaceans), though I won’t lie I prefer having captive bred species than wild caught (obvious rescue exceptions) most species are difficult or haven’t been breed, and I’m sure the process acquiring these animals are carefully managed and processed. Also SeaWorld Abu Dhabi seems to be more modern and advance than your average American SeaWorld with all due respect.

I was not aware that manta rays could be collected in US waters, but for a species that is only listed as threatened, state agencies can (and do) issue permits, although Florida is the only state that approves the permits.

According to the article, "From 2019 to 2022, Florida issued 17 exhibition licenses to aquariums in China, France, the United Arab Emirates and Maryland, the report found...Those aquariums weren’t successful in capturing a manta ray during that timeframe, but the number of licenses suggests increasing interest around the world, according to the report."

No idea what Maryland facility applied, although it could be a third party broker to sell individuals overseas.

Florida allowed capture of threatened giant manta ray
