Amazing spotting on the condor, could you share more details about where in the zoo the maintenance yard is?

The cape vulture exhibit has always been there, but hard to see with the foliage + color of the birds unless they move! Gave me a good scare the first time I saw one take flight
The zoo maintenance yard is located to the right of the main path between the Rainforest of the Americas exit (jaguar habitat) and the World of Birds Theater as you walk towards the back of the zoo. There is a brown sign from L.A. Parks and Rec that looks similar to all the other ones posted at the entrance of parks around the city that says something like "L.A. Zoo Welcomes You." Behind the chain link fence are forklifts, bulldozers, and other heavy machinery that the zoo uses for maintenance. It's kind of funny the sign is there because the whole area is off-limits to the public. Anyway, on top of the hill overlooking this yard is the condor habitat where I was able to see one perched through my binoculars.

I likely never would have seen the condor if I hadn't struck up a conversation with another zoo visitor as I was looking at the Cape vulture. We started talking about the zoo's efforts with condor conservation and he showed me a good vantage point to see the condor habitat. Apparently, the zoo sometimes does condor spotting with telescopes after the World of Birds show although I've never been there for that presentation. I really hope the zoo will have a condor exhibit someday!

Thank You for the response and reassurance.I really appreciate it.

Since Toledo Zoo will be getting some for the New Reptile House, it's only a matter of time before every Zoo in the USA will add Perenties and Breed them to their Collection in their Reptile Houses or Australia sections.
You really think every zoo in the US will soon have Perenites?

I beg to differ as these monitor lizards along with several other monitor lizard species are highly specialised niche habitat wildlife and require specialist herp husbandry care and exhibitry. Not every US/AZA zoo has those capabilities!!!!! Having said that I do think that Toledo Zoo might acquire the species given their track record.

Which 3 North American zoos have actually bred Perenties and in what numbers / years?

Omaha had around 6 individuals (2023), Dallas (2022-2023) had multiple and LA just had their first? hatchlings.
That is quite neat number! I believe given that perenties have only been a more recent importation and feature of US zoos that is quite a good level of breeders and I expect that the network may widen further given the long term and deep interest within the US zoo community for all herp fauna (both reptiles and amphiibians ...).

I went during my Volunteer Shift for ZooLights Last Night and so far from what I seen, the Cambodia Elephants of Asia Viewing Area has made a couple of shade structures with Pagoda style roofs.

Mostly it would be open around in the First Month of the New Year.

I am really holding out that finally now bull Billy will get some young females to actually have him become a breeder! That vast elephant exhibit and house deserve a functional breeding herd (and for sure that would shut up the vocal anti zoo-elephant "fluffies".

It seems more likely that Billy is going to be sent away and the elephant complex converted to rhino space, or some other species. That seems to be where things are going with U.S. zoo elephant programs that do not have successful family herds in place. Given the political climate in Los Angeles, I don't see them bringing in more elephants. I could be wrong, but that would be my guess.

I mean most of the zoos with Asian Elephants have been renovating and opening their Habitats that can hold Multi-Generational Herds and swapping Breeding bulls in between them, so there is a chance for young females whether in the USA or from an international zoo like Dublin Zoo sent some of their elephants for Cincinnati Zoo's New Elephant Habitat.

Also, the Elephant Plaza is where you can listen to Ray Conniff's Christmas Songs and Meet Santa for ZooLights This Year.

The Information Bulletin Board Siganges and Education Counters have been removed from the Thailand Pavilion, why is that?

Unfortunately it doesn't, they complain either way. I am of similar opinion to @DavidBrown , I do not see much chance of them continuing on with elephants. The zoo is city-run and therefore much more vulnerable to being swayed on getting out of a species that continues to draw ire. Equally there isn't really a robust enough population of Asian Elephants to send in multiples for a new herd, and I'll be majorly shocked if LA imports from Europe. The hammering they would get from the activists would not be worth it to the city I don't doubt.

@DAVID, I suppose you are right (and sadly so...)! California has not been immune to the current wave of toxic nebulae almost extrimist views seem to help define policy making rationale in the State where zoos and wildlife are concerned. I do think the entire zoo community locally should be really worried about the tunnelvision focus on antis AW zoo elephants. Particularly so, where a world class elephant exhibit indoor and outdoor sits bare with only one truthfully hopeful in bull Billy! I do hope he will be transferred within the AZA network to a breeding location.

A lawsuit was filed a few days ago by the Los Angeles Zoo against GLAZA (Greater Los Angeles Zoo Association) alleging breach of contract among other complaints. This was just reported in the news on December 23 and more details may be found in this article: LA Sues Zoo Affiliated Non-Profit for - MyNewsLA.com

As discussed earlier in this thread, the zoo and GLAZA are going their separate ways after 61 years and it appears their partnership has reached a rocky end. Hopefully, the zoo will be able to turn things around for the better as there is a lot of pressure on the City of Los Angeles to host a successful Summer Olympics in 2028 and spruce up the city for tourists. The upcoming games are also the best chance for the zoo to acquire more elephants since there is really no time or budget for the zoo to substantially change the Elephants of Asia exhibit before then and it wouldn't look good to leave such a large area vacant or underpopulated for global visitors.

I figured the zoo's had the same head elephant curator for the past few decades especially in the heat of the controversy surrounding Billy, who went all in on pushing for Billy to get a better home at the Zoo - hopefully they're able to pull something off and get Billy some more company! (Maybe from White Oak or Houston?)
