Pairi Daiza Pairi Daiza News 2025

That’s true, the problem is Eric Domb and Marc Coucke are both very rich people and invest a lot of money in Pairi Daiza. The sky is the limit. That’s not the case for the KMDA for example.

I'm sure it's very easy for Pairi Daiza to take a strong moral position against population management when they're comfortable sending their surplus animals to facilities such as the Melios Pet Center Zoo. I respect their stance but it falls flat knowing the lives some of their surplus have gone on to live.

Ok, there is a chance I might have read the wrong study, but according to the one the article mentions it just says that zoos should breed more animals and euthanize the surplus animals around the time of natural dispersal. Though it does mention geriatric animals, it is more in the context of populations starting to age due to restrictions to reproduction, not that they should be euthanized (at least thats my takeaway from it). However in the article they mention old animals not young surplus, so either the director understood the study differently or he created a strawman argument to attack for some PR.

The published article addresses both. The idea is that you should not restrict breeding, but instead try to recreate natural death rates: for geriatric animals and for sub-adult surplus animals. In nature, these are both the groups that, after neonates, have the highest death rates.

And the amount of money that PD has, has no sense within the question. This is not a problem of a single zoo, it is a problem of the whole zoo community. Zoos and breeding programmes are running out of space, because space is being taken by geriatric animals, and restricting breeding will kill many zoo populations before we can even see them going extinct. Young females will not be mothers and learn to be mothers, contracepted animals will become infertile, etc. Zoos are literally avoiding breeding the next generation of animals to keep aged individuals.

For PD CEO, animals might not be numbers, but I am sure he cares more about certain numbers than the animals he keeps in his zoo.

I won’t kill my dog for example because he is old.

You missed the point of the study. The main point was that the death of an individuell may help to improve the overall situation for the whole species.

Imo the PD statement was completely unnecessary.

I do, but why killing an animal that is still good for the breeding program? If it can still fulfill it’s role for the species?

Btw, there are coming 3 black panthers to Pairi Daiza, they are staying at the tiger temple at the World of Ganesha. I wonder where they are going to be housed in the end.

Are they already there? Are they jaguars or leopards ( and which subspecies?) and will they be visible at the start of the season? This is the first time i heard something about the panthers since it was first announced a few years ago, i assumed the project got cancelled.

In other news, they are building a new chinese village and steppe zone with yaks and prewalzski's horses on the dome/personnel parking. Likely the Golden snub nosed monkeys will also move here.
It was also announced that the 'lost world' thing will be just animatronics, so not the natural history museum i had hoped for:(

Yet some more news ( a lot of news today :D) 2 serres have been constructed in Bruggelette (nearby village) where the sanctuary plants are already growing. The interview also mentions Indonesian and Malaysian plant species, is this a sign the greenhouse is not going to be fully South America themed anymore?
The "adventure bridge" in the Chinese garden is also being renovated and will likely reopen next season.

Fingers crossed… weren’t there going to be Komodo dragons too?
I haven't heard anything of Komodo dragons in the sanctuary if you mean that.
There are already Komodo Dragons in The kingdom of Ganesh zone of the park, i don't see the need to move them.

I would like to know, where has this information come from? I didn’t see this be mentioned on PD’s social media.

Not sure, I thought that there were plans that the Komodo Dragons were going to get a new terrarium for them at The Sanctuary, but I think they already got a solid terrarium at the moment.

The answer therefore was already at the thread:

Zoos and breeding programmes are running out of space, because space is being taken by geriatric animals, and restricting breeding will kill many zoo populations before we can even see them going extinct. Young females will not be mothers and learn to be mothers, contracepted animals will become infertile, etc. Zoos are literally avoiding breeding the next generation of animals to keep aged individuals..

And also the study to which the PD statement is referring, shows the reasons in a very detailed way.

Translated this one for you from the Facebook page of Pairi Daiza:

Nuka, the polar bear that went from Pairi Daiza to Zoologischer Stadtgarten Karlsruhe, gave birth to her first cub. Her little bear cub, safe in its den, is doing good.

This birth is a step closer to the conservation of the polar bear. Every birth gives hope for this iconic species.

We’re proud of Nuka and we’re looking forward to follow the adventures of the little cub.

Whereabouts in the Park would this be?
